"I have a master's degree in Kinesiology and teach lecture classes in Kinesiology (think nutrition, wellness, etc.) at a local college. I also own a training studio where I work with athletes for sport performance and the general pop in fat loss - thanks for dropping in"
KP.. I understand this is a bb thread, but I was wondering if you could give me some quick advice on the best way to lose the belly fat... my doc says I have a fatty liver and the only way to help that is to lose weight around the waist. I'm not obese, but would like to lose 20 pounds. Mom had cirrhosis of the liver and was not a drinker... due to her fatty liver. Sorry for messing up the thread... appreciate any advice you might have...

Not messing up the thread at all - glad to help.
I can't prescribe anything to you specifically, but if I had a friend or family member with your exact situation here is what I would tell them:
Two things a) weight loss (and most importantly fat loss) is 75-80% nutrition. Your meals should consist of lean proteins, fruit and green vegetables - that is by far the main thing. If you multiply your current bodyweight by 11 that is a good starting point for how many calories you should be consuming on a daily basis to lose weight (fat) regularly.
Any kind of activity is helpful (even walking or stair stepping etc.), but nutrition is more important if you had to choose between the two.
There is no such thing as "spot reduction" (aka choosing where you lose your fat from) but there is some encouraging data from some very recent research that cardio intervals (bike intervals to be specific) helped reduce belly fat in particular at a higher level than other types of exercise.
A bike interval is just alternating periods of quick(er) cycling with slow(er) cycling. I use the website: https://www.beach-fitness.com/tabata/ for an interval timer and I set the time for 8-secs of fast/12-secs of slow for about 10-minutes of work. This info is based on current research that I am examining at the college.
I would also remind my friend or family member to warm-up properly and cool-down appropriately after the cardio intervals.
Lastly, I would encourage you to TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW that you are now in fat loss mode. Have them keep you accountable and have them help, not hurt, your goals. Loved ones have a bad habit of being enablers, don't let them do that. I expect you to tell 10+ people tonight of your new goals (and if you have facebook, I expect your facebook status to detail your goal for the world to see)
