With Ralph Wallard off to Louisville to work under Rick Pitino--a great move by Wallard, who will be building that resume even higher to, more than likely, find a bigger, better HC job at a bigger conference--Holy Cross' head coaching seat is wide open.
Pitt assistant coach Tom Herrion, known best for pulling in Jermaine Dixon here, was the head coach at C of C and posted an 80-38 record there. While he will see more pay from Pitt, the Holy Cross job has to be quite tempting for a man like Herrion, who is licking his chops at getting back at the helm. Another HUGE reason this job seems like Herrions fit, is that Tom is a native of Oxford, MA. He'll be back home.
If Herrion leaves Pitt for HC, that benefits one team in large proportions, while the other team loses a pretty large piece in the recruiting puzzle.

As a HC grad I don't think you get it. Ralph is not looking to build his resume. I believe his health made him decide to give up the pressure of the head coaching job. HC needs a coach who can deal with the extremely stringent academic requirements. Not the job for everyone.

I don't think YOU get it. Why in God's name would you go to the Big East with a top-tier team and on the staff of one of the more intense coaches in the league for your health? Do you know exactly what an assistant coach in a league like the Big East goes through? Between constant recruiting trips, recruiting (in general), playcalling, keeping the kids in order, etc etc etc, it's a full time, heart pounding job. So you can be from HC all you want, but compared to the intensity of the Big East and Louisville, HC isn't even a heart murmor.

Do you know exactly what an assistant coach in a league like the Big East goes through? No offense drizzle but first of all his name is WILLARD. He is almost 65 years old and had cancer and open heart surgery. Rick is his best friend and this is definitely not a "resume builder". Please get your facts straight before you talk about something you know nothing about.

That's the only thing I think we agree on here. I mean, just look what he walked into with the whole Pitino scandal. Grant it, it turned out to be nothing, but this is what he will be dealing with a great bit of with Pitino at the wheel. He's not exactly a sea of tranquility-esque coach is he?
When it comes to recruiting, game time, game planning, etc etc etc, Pitino is a cutting edge person that is always stirring things up and pushing it to the brink of legal-toi-illegal activities. As does every Big East or equivalent program does.
Comparing that to an HC job at Cross is apples and oranges. Schools that comes out of divisions like the Patriot are nowhere near the hustle and bustle of a Big East program. You're talking going from Albany to New York City.
I just can't possibly see going to Louisville because of health. Connections, possible boast in resume in case of another HC job and money, yeah. But health?

And by the way, the main reason I brought the defibrillator out to revive this story, Tom Herrion, did NOT get the Cross job, which I think was pretty lame.
Herrion, living less than 15 miles from campus, obvious ties with the program and a pretty solid resume was the proper choice for that job. Instead, it goes to Sean Kearney, who I have GREAT respect for, and think will do a good job. But, saying that, I really think Tom got the raw end of the deal in this situation.
I do wish Kearney and his new digs a great season and a hopeful shot at the Patriot title.

He then jumped ship off to Pitt where it didn't work out how he had hoped and he was forced to drop back down to the likes of Holy Cross where he remained for quite some time. I honestly believe that going from a head coach at a small school to a assistant at a big time school is not a bright move for the most part. Willard has tried the Holy Cross angle to get to a better program and it hasn't worked so I suppose I can see his point of view on this move.
