Being that this a tournament, keep in mind the games often start later than the posted time….
Eight Teams in this Tournament: Ohio, St. John’s, Hawaii, Louisiana-Lafayette, Saint Mary’s, Tulane, East Tennessee, and Georgia.
It’s disturbing when looking at Hawaii’s lineup, that 4 starters and the first two guys off the bench are Seniors. 6 of 7 of Hawaii’s top minute getters are JC transfers and transfers from Air Force and Colorado State. This means that First Year Hawaii Coach’s real rebuilding year will be next year. Hawaii can be expected to be pretty bad for the next two years.…
- 3-4 Hawaii has had 10 days off since beating LBSU 61-57.
- 2-6 Louisiana-Lafayette has had 3 days off after a 3 pointer to beat UL Monroe.
- Hawaii is 88 -17 the last 6 years at home.
- Hawaii has won 7 of the last 10 Rainbow Tournaments, and is 17-1 in this Tournament over the last 6 years. Even when Hawaii is crap, they win this Tournament (see last year, when they steamrolled much better Creighton and Nebraska).
My Pick and Reasons Why:
Hawaii -11
I have been brutal on this crap Hawaii team this year, however, I feel this is a good spot for them…..
- Experience. I have no doubt La-Lafayette is more athletic than Hawaii (your intramural team is more athletic than Hawaii). However, Hawaii plays 6 Seniors. La-Lafayette plays 7 Freshmen. Hawaii has 4 starters averaging double digits. Two of Hawaii’s starters, Team Captains Matt Gibson and Bobby Nash have been named Rainbow Classic Tourney MVPs in the last 3 years. Both players have a history of stepping up large for this Tourney.
- Hawaii shoots very well, 45.6% at home. La-Lafayette is a horrendous shooting team, 35%. Hawaii also shoots nearly 40% from 3 at home, Lafayette shoots 29% from 3. Hawaii is also a very good ft shooting team at 74%, and with 3 guards, can put away teams at the end of games with fts.
- Rebounding. Lafayette is a very poor rebounding team to begin with…. Note though Utah Jazz’s Paul Milisap’s little brother plays for Lafayette and leads them with 7 rebounds per game. Hawaii’s 7 seniors remember Paul Milisap very well, as I am pretty sure no Hawaii player beat Paul Milisap (La Tech versus Hawaii was bank the last 4 years if anyone remembers). Little Milisap is no where near as good as big brother and is only 6ft 5 inches….. Hawaii players have noted they will shore up the boards and hope to get a little revenge on younger Milisap
- Deceiving records. Hawaii may be 3-4 but look at their losses. Illinois was a tight one, SD was a very tough match up twice with Pomare killing Hawaii, and no one wins at New Mexico, period. Hawaii easily handled inferior teams at home. Also, Hawaii played WITHOUT their Team Captain and PG Matt Gibson the first 4 games……. Lafayette on the other hand, should be 1-7 with their one win over a Division II Team if not for a game saving 3…..
- Hawaii has been practicing hard the last 10 days and is upbeat for this tournament. Where have the 7 visiting teams been? Yesterday, they were taken to one of Hawaii’s most scenic beaches for snorkeling and sun…. In player interviews, those guys looked like they were giddy little kids looking at fishes….
I mentioned in previous posts that laying double digits with Hawaii is crazy, however, this line is justified….Hawaii is well rested, healthy, focused, and very motivated to tear Lafayette to shreds…..

GL2U but I will take the points in this one...people go to Hawaii and lose based on the fact of being there a short time and having a good time...tourney going on there for a while and I will take the points...Good Luck
