A couple of struggling squads face off on Saturday, as the Montreal Alouettes play host to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Montreal lost in Hamilton earlier this year, and my Tiger-Cats vs. Alouettes predictions expect the Tabbies to pounce again.
Here are my best free CFL picks for this East Division clash on September 6.
Tiger-Cats vs Alouettes prediction
My Tiger-Cats vs Alouettes pick: Tiger-Cats -2.5 alt spread (-125 at BET99)
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are still atop the East despite a three-game slide, but they need to turn things around. Thankfully, they get to face the Montreal Alouettes, who have lost four in a row while going just 1-7 against the spread in their last eight.
The Als are getting healthy at the right time with wideouts Austin Mack and Tyson Philpot returning this week. That said, the most important position on the field is quarterback, and starting pivot Davis Alexander still isn't healthy enough to play.
That means another start for fourth-string QB James Morgan, who struggled in his CFL debut in Week 12, completing 18-of-33 passes for 198 yards with two picks. The Als mustered just 13 points in that game and have been held below 20 points in three of their last four contests.
With Morgan under center, the Als won't be able to keep pace with an explosive Hamilton aerial attack spearheaded by Bo Levi Mitchell. The Ticats pivot is the CFL MOP favourite and has a bevy of talented receivers at his disposal.
Given how important a capable quarterback is in this league, I'll back the squad with the MOP candidate over the side starting a fourth-stringer. That said, I'd prefer to buy a point and grab Hamilton below the key number of 3.
Tiger-Cats vs Alouettes same-game parlay (SGP)
When these teams previously clashed back in June, Hamilton won 35-17, with the Ticats scoring a pair of defensive touchdowns that barely sent the game Over the total.
I expect another subpar outing from Morgan and this Als offense, but we should also see strong defensive play from the home side.
Montreal's defense has been solid, ranking second in the league in sacks (26) and yards allowed per play (6.36). It should be even better with safety Marc-Antoine Dequoy returning after a one-month absence, and Mustafa Johnson set to make his long-awaited return as well.
Johnson was arguably the best defensive tackle in the CFL before suffering a season-ending knee injury last September. If he's back to his previous self, the Als' stop unit reaches another level.
