David Morrell vs. Yamaguchi Falcao is scheduled for 12 rounds in the super middleweight division as a featured undercard attraction on the Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia card from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Morrell is gaining momentum with just eight fights under his belt. He will need to make a strong impression against Falcao, a last-minute replacement who understands that a victory could reignite his sputtering career.

Boxing odds have Morrell a comprehensive -2,000 favorite. Falcao is a +950 underdog.

Here are our betting picks and predictions for Morrell vs. Falcao on Saturday, April 22.

David Morrell vs Yamaguchi Falcao betting preview

Some are calling for Morrell to take on the likes of David Benavidez and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. That doesn’t bode well for Falcao, who is coming in as a late substitute for Sena Agbeko. Whether it was Agbeko or Falcao, their purpose was to provide Morrell a replay-worthy moment on a big pay-per-view, not necessarily to be competitive.

The big punching Cuban is quickly becoming a serious contender at super middleweight. Unlike previous Cuban exiles, Morrell fights like a professional and has steered clear of the pitfalls of being overly conservative and fighting to the level of his competition. Concerning Morrell, he is exhibiting advanced skills for someone with his record, but Falcao is a significant step down in class.

Morrell has stopped seven opponents in eight wins, with six of them coming in the first four rounds. He‘s a slick operator with heavy hands, creating openings with his footwork and punch selections, and can switch from offense to defense with great success. Last November, Morrell put on a horrific beating of Aidos Yerbossynuly that left him in a coma.

Falcao was a former amateur standout who looked like he was going places. The 2012 Olympian suffered a shocking upset to Chris Pearson in 2019, followed by a draw by D’Mitrius Ballard that killed his push. Since then, he’s gone back to the drawing board and fought ho-hum opponents while staying under the radar.

Even before Falcao’s setbacks, he was a technically gifted boxer. While he competed at light heavyweight as an amateur, he spent the majority of his career between middleweight and super middleweight. If the 35-year-old Southpaw is going to make good on the lost potential, he’ll need all the help he can get.

David Morrell vs Yamaguchi Falcao boxing prediction and best bet

Prediction: Morrell ML

Falcao is not as big of a puncher as Agbeko, and I’d have my doubts if he could beat Agbeko, let alone Morrell. While Falcao has put a decent winning streak together, there’s nothing in those performances that show any sign of evolution to the point where he’s going to look remotely competitive.

If Morrell is a real elite, then he won’t allow Falcao to stink him out. His excellent boxing acumen and power should find a hole in Falcao’s guard big enough to land an overhand left. The call here is Morrell to win, but at -2,000, value is found elsewhere with props.

Prediction: Morrell moneyline (-2,000 at DraftKings)

Best bet: Morrell in rounds 4-6

As Falcao is coming in on short notice and isn’t strong enough to fight Morrell off, this fight going into the middle rounds would be an upset itself. This should start off with both boxers feeling each other out, but by the third round, Morrell is putting on the gas. There should be a stoppage by no later than round six.

The best bet for this fight only pays out +180, but we’re calling for Morrell to win between rounds four and six.

Prediction: Morrell wins in rounds 4-6 (+180 at DraftKings)
