Wilder vs Herndon prediction and pick

Fight analysis
It is no secret that  Deontay Wilder is a shot fighter. All four of his losses have come in his last five fights, and he arguably hasn’t won a round outside of scoring knockdowns since his 2019 win over Luis Ortiz.

The reality check that Tyson Fury gave him in their one-sided trilogy left him a shell of his former self, and back-to-back losses to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang reinforced the view that Wilder’s success was more a miracle of modern matchmaking than proof of elite skill.

He’s sticking around to cash in on his name value as a former Olympian and heavyweight champion, hoping to resolve unfinished business with fellow fading star Anthony Joshua or score enough wins to angle for another payday against the division’s top dogs. The first step back is an easy one.

There’s not much known about the 37-year-old Herndon, but his 29-5 record is padded and uninspiring. He’s been knocked out inside three rounds in four of those losses and disqualified in the other, and he didn’t beat a fighter with a winning record until more than 20 fights into his career. His most notable opponent was a debuting Efe Ajagba, who knocked him out in 89 seconds.

This is as soft a touch as Wilder can get and a much-needed chance to regain confidence after years of one-sided setbacks. Herndon should give Wilder the chance to unleash his trademark right hand without forcing him back into the hesitant, gun-shy shell we’ve seen since the aftermath of the Fury fights.

While this fight won’t reveal anything new about Wilder, it’s exactly the kind of mismatch he used to build his early record. Wilder is the pick.

Best best analysis
Herndon lacks the chin, power, and boxing ability to negate Wilder’s power or even discern him from letting his hands go. If anything, Herndon will look paralyzed after the opening bell and won’t likely be able to beat the count when he inevitably gets put down after Wilder pounces on him.

Wilder straight-up is the pick for now, but keep an eye out for Wilder via Round 1 stoppage closer to fight time.
