And using 9/11 as fodder for nationalism is NOT a way to commemorate the victims of said disaster. Very powerful manipulation of people who have a common pain they can all recall.

I gotta say I was disappointed in that. I thought maybe he would reach out to them and discuss that it may be better to place it somewhere else.
But they do have the right to do it. It's what this country was based on, no matter how much in bad taste it is.

The governor of NY, Patterson, reached out the group building the mosque and said he would support them but asked if they had considered building the mosque in a different part of the city because of the sensitivity surrounding the issue.
The group said they understood the negativity but they had purchased that piece of property specifically to serve the lower manhatten are of the city. They said there was no other places that would give them the ease of access to Muslims in the lower manhatten area as this location presents.
I really think people are looking at this the wrong way. If it was a church or temple or anything else that was religious and not Muslim, there would be no story.
I find it disturbing that people associate Islam/Muslims with being anti-American and standing for the downfall of America. This is a 1st amendment rights issue and there is nothing to prevent the group from building what they plan on building.

the word wackos in the beginning of my post refers to those christians who think they, on average, are any better than muslims, on average. the reference to widely known christian nuts is stated hypothetically from the impending muslim majority to illustrate the point that christians today should treat muslims as christians would want to be treated by muslims if the numbers changed, which they might.
i don't understand the rest of your post but yes, 9/11 was caused by a few muslim terrorists. there are over a billion muslims in this world. the overwhelming majority of them are perfectly good people, just like most christians.
that's one reason why we have freedom of religion in the constitution. no one religion is better than another and no one member of a religion is better or worse than another until proven otherwise. if people acted like that, religion wouldn't be such a fuckin disaster and source of so many problems and conflicts..
