Super Bowl sparks push for single-game wagering in Canada

Super Bowl Sunday will come and go in Canada, a missed opportunity to benefit from single-game sports wagering in the eyes of business organizations in Windsor and Niagara Falls.

The Canadian Senate has hit the pause button on Bill C-290, which would allow single-game sports betting instead of the current parlay system.

“Having single sports betting at Caesars Windsor for Super Bowl weekend would unquestionably add significant economic activity and excitement to our region,” Matt Marchand, president of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce, told the Windsor Star.

The bill was originally purposed by NDP MP Joe Comartin (Windsor-Tecumseh) and after unanimous support from all three parties and swift movement through the House of Commons, the Senate put the breaks on the bill and hasn’t debated it since November. If defeated, it will be the first time in Canada's history that a bill unanimously passed in the House is killed by the Senate.

“It’s hard to believe this has been on the Senate agenda for almost a year with little or no action when it has been supported in the House of Commons by all parties,” Carolyn Bones, president of the Niagara Falls Chamber of Commerce, said in the article. “Having single sports betting at Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara for Super Bowl weekend would bring visitors to Niagara Falls near summer weekend numbers.”

The debate over Bill C-290 is expected to resume this Tuesday.

Senators need to stop being appointed in Canada but rather voted it in. We are a democratic nation afterall.
