The New York Liberty will try to extend their undefeated start to the WNBA season as they host the expansion Golden State Valkyries for the second time this week tonight.
Golden State showed little ability to compete with the defending WNBA champions on Tuesday, and I’m taking New York to cover again in tonight's Valkyries vs. Liberty predictions.
I’ll break down this matchup in more detail below as I dive into my free WNBA picks for Thursday, May 29.
Valkyries vs Liberty predictions
My Valkyries vs Liberty best bet: Liberty -16.5 (-105 at Caesars)
On Tuesday, the New York Liberty showed the expansion Golden State Valkyries just how far they were from being able to compete with the WNBA elite. New York put up a 28-point win, and barely broke a sweat to get there.
The Liberty were up by 17 points at the end of the first quarter and coasted from there. New York went deep into its bench, playing 11 players, and still never came close to coughing up the lead.
That’s not entirely on Golden State.
The Liberty are undefeated to start the year and will be a tough team for anyone to beat the way they’re playing right now. They lead the league in both offensive rating (112.2) and defensive rating (92.2), have by far the best true shooting percentage in the league at 61.9%, and have the second-lowest turnover rate at 15.2%. That’s a combination that has even other experienced teams with a narrow path to victory when they face off against New York.
The Valkyries have actually gotten off to a good start in their first season, playing solid defense and allowing a reasonable 81.5 points per game over their first four. But they are among the worst offensive squads in the league, putting up just 73.0 PPG and ranking dead last in offensive rating (87.7).
The biggest issue is the Valkyries — like almost every expansion team in pro sports history — lack star power.
While five Golden State players are averaging double digits, none are putting up more than 12.8 PPG, with veteran forward Kayla Thornton leading the squad after only averaging 7.1 for her career.
That sort of production will never keep up with the Liberty's firepower.
They easily found good shots on their way to shooting 50% from the floor on Tuesday night. I expect more of the same tonight, with another blowout allowing New York to easily cover the spread for a second time.

I love the Liberty to win in a blowout again tonight, and I think we’re likely to see more total points than we did in the first matchup.
New York will likely score 95+ points again against an overmatched Valkyries defense, and it’ll be hard to keep Golden State from scoring more than the 67 they put up on Tuesday. These are two of the fastest-paced teams in the WNBA (at least in the early going), so I’m expecting to hit the Over.
Breanna Stewart should take advantage of that dynamic again and put up another big game.
Stewart shot 10-for-14 on her way to an easy 24 points on Tuesday despite playing only 27 minutes. It’s unlikely Stewart gets any less playing time, even in another lopsided game, and Golden State won't suddenly shut down one of the league’s best post-scorers.
