Racing to a 5-0 start, the New York Liberty aren’t taking their foot off the gas after winning the 2024 WNBA title — and the Washington Mystics are the latest team in the firing line tonight.
Washington snapped a three-game skid with a win over the Caitlin Clark-less Indiana Fever on Wednesday, and my Liberty vs. Mystics predictions expect a dogfight here, with New York coming off a tough battle last night.

My Liberty vs Mystics best bet: Under 161.5 (-110 at FanDuel)
The New York Liberty’s offensive ceiling always looms large, but the Washington Mystics have shown a knack for getting stops and playing on their terms. With a slight freshness edge, the Mystics have a shot at turning tonight’s contest into a defense-first scrap.
That makes the Under an attractive pick. The Mystics have served up four straight Unders, including a 68-62 loss to the Phoenix Mercury last weekend, and they’re short on bucket-getters after trading Ariel Atkins in the offseason, along with Elena Della Donne’s retirement. As a result, the hosts have been held under 75 points in three of their last four contests.
Meanwhile, New York’s past two outings have also cashed the Under, and there’s some uncertainty over Jonquel Jones’ availability after she missed last night’s game with a hamstring issue. Breanna Stewart & Co. had reached the 90-point mark in four straight contests but only shot 38% from the field in last night’s 82-77 win over the Golden State Valkyries.
The Liberty now have to find a spark on the second night of a back-to-back. Sabrina Ionescu logged 36 minutes yesterday as New York was pushed to the limit by the Valkyries, so look for Sandy Brondello to lean more on her second unit tonight. I’m not ready to bet against the visitors or even take them as underdogs ATS, but this one could be a real grind.
Though the Over is 8-2 in the past 10 meetings between these teams, I’m expecting a different story here at CFG Bank Arena, with Washington’s defense having some success against the defending champs.

Sabrina Ionescu Over 2.5 threes
Brittney Sykes Over 3.5 rebounds
Sooner or later, the Ionescu fireworks will start sizzling, but so far she’s been well short of her best. Ionescu is still searching for a rhythm, and her 7-for-21 stat line last night against Golden State was the latest indicator that there’s plenty of rust to shake off.
However, six of those made shots were from downtown in a performance that was more assertive than a quiet 3-for-8 effort two nights earlier. Ionescu also finished with 3+ threes in two of her outings against the Mystics last year.
If the hosts are going to pull off an upset, it starts with a monster stat line from Brittney Sykes, who led the way against the Fever earlier this week. Her shot-making has caught the eye to start the season, headlined by a 30-point explosion against Golden State, but this feels like a matchup where Sykes’ relentless hustle will stand out above all else.
She’s grabbed 5+ boards in each of her last three outings, including nine rebounds against Indiana, and Washington will need her athleticism to match the Liberty’s strength on the glass. Sykes could nail this Over in the first half tonight, assuming the Mystics force enough misses.
