Sinner vs Shelton prediction and best bet

Match analysis

Ben Shelton may disagree, but Wednesday’s quarterfinal match against No. 1 Jannik Sinner is the biggest match of his brief career.

Shelton loves the big stage, as he’s amassed a 31-12 Grand Slam mark. He seeks his third GS semifinal appearance and second semi this season (Australian Open).

The Americans’ service game hasn’t been dominant here. He’s fired 44 aces and has won only 79% of his first offerings and 60% of his second. Despite that, Shelton has only dropped one set, and I think he’ll beat Sinner.

Sinner is in trouble physically. His fall during the opening game against Grigor Dimitrov required a medical timeout, and he awaits the results of an MRI scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Sinner needs his big serve and big forehand combo to beat Shelton. He won’t have either, and that opens a door that Shelton has already walked through twice and should do again Wednesday.

Best best analysis

Sinners' elbow could be fine. If that is the case, then he will likely beat Shelton. That beating could be quick, as he’s smacked Big Bennie in four straight matches.

Pro athletes don’t typically seek an MRI unless it's a serious injury. Sinners' game was hampered by his fall, and that could be the case on Wednesday.

Unless he gets devastating news, Sinner will likely give it a go, but the World No. 1 won’t throw his career away. He’ll pull the plug at the first sign of trouble, making an early retirement a real possibility.

The Under is 4-0 in Sinners’ four Wimbledon matches. The Under is 3-1 during Shelton’s run. With so much uncertainty, my best bet is to follow their trends and bet Under 39.5 games.
