San Francisco @ Arizona preview

Chase Field

Last Meeting ( Sep 15, 2012 ) San Francisco 3, Arizona 2

The San Francisco Giants look to complete a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday and extend their winning streak to five. The Giants are 19-10 in the month since All-Star outfielder Melky Cabrera was suspended for using performance-enhancing drugs, and they’re 7 1/2 games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. Things are quite different for the Diamondbacks, who have scored four runs or less in 12 consecutive home games, tying the 2004 team for the longest streak in franchise history. Arizona, which is 2-8 in its last nine at Chase Field, stands 4 1/2 games behind St. Louis and Los Angeles in the race for the second wild card spot.

One reason the Giants haven’t missed Cabrera as much as expected has been the play of center fielder Angel Pagan, who ripped a triple on Saturday. His 13th triple broke a single season San Francisco record that was previously shared by Willie Mays (1960) and Steve Finley (2006). Buster Posey is expected to start at catcher in Sunday’s series finale after playing at first on Saturday. Posey, who has started 24 games at first and 101 at catcher this season, leads the majors in both stolen-base attempts against (80) and runners thrown out (28). Arizona heads into Sunday’s game in need of more power from first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, who hasn't homered in 27 contests. Outfielder Jason Kubel is batting .125 (8-for-64) in his past 19 games.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Ryan Vogelsong (12-8, 3.40 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (5-7, 4.19)

Vogelsong has allowed 14 earned runs in his last 14 1/3 innings, with just one quality start in his past six outings. He gave up four earned runs over five innings last Monday in Colorado. He’s 2-2 with a 3.28 ERA in 12 career games against the Diamondbacks, and he has a 6.10 ERA in two starts this season.

Corbin allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings last Sunday against the Padres to remain winless over his last four outings with a 6.85 ERA over that stretch. He was 3-0 with a 2.77 ERA in four starts from Aug. 1-18. The rookie is 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA in two starts against San Francisco this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Giants have gone 9-0-1 in their last 10 road series.

2. Arizona INF Willie Bloomquist (back) is doubtful to return this season.

3. Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson needs one more win to reach 200 for his career.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
