Arizona @ Los Angeles preview

Dodger Stadium

Last Meeting ( Sep 1, 2012 ) Arizona 1, LA Dodgers 2

The Los Angeles Dodgers broke an eight-game losing streak against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday, but they still have plenty of question marks entering Sunday’s series finale. Los Angeles is 4 1/2 games behind National League West-leading San Francisco and 1 1/2 games back of the second wild card spot, while Arizona is barely holding onto its faint playoff hopes after falling 9 1/2 games behind the Giants. The Dodgers are still waiting for medical updates on closer Kenley Jansen (irregular heartbeat) and Chad Billingsley (elbow), and there’s a chance both could be out for the rest of the season.

Los Angeles’ offense has gone relatively quiet over the past week despite the addition of first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who is 5-for-32 (.156) with three RBIs since hitting a three-run homer in his first at-bat with the Dodgers. Matt Kemp is also scuffling after hitting 10-for-36 (.277) with just two extra base-hits (two doubles) over his past 10 games. Arizona activated pitchers Josh Collmenter and Takashi Saito and infielders Willie Bloomquist and Cody Ransom when rosters expanded Saturday, but the team is waiting to recall its top prospects from Triple-A Reno until the Aces are eliminated from the Pacific Coast League playoffs.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Wade Miley (14-9, 2.85 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Chris Capuano (11-10, 3.58)

Miley remains in the discussion for NL Rookie of the Year after allowing three runs or fewer in 18 of his 23 starts. He’s 2-1 with a 1.71 ERA in his last three outings, including last Tuesday against the Reds when he gave up three runs in seven innings. Miley is 2-1 with a 2.53 ERA in three starts against the Dodgers this season.

Capuano has gone 2-7 since July 3, and he yielded six runs in as many innings last Tuesday against Colorado. He’s 2-6 with a 4.67 ERA in 10 career games (nine starts) against the Diamondbacks. He’s made three starts against Arizona this season, going 1-2 with a 5.82 ERA. The 34-year-old left-hander can surpass his 2011 win total with a victory.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Dodgers recalled C Tim Federowicz, RHP Javy Guerra and RHP John Ely from Triple-A Albuquerque.

2. Arizona closer J.J. Putz has converted 19 straight save opportunities, the third-longest active streak in the majors behind Aroldis Chapman (25) and Huston Street (21).

3. The Dodgers have allowed just 104 home runs this season, the second-fewest in the majors behind only the Nationals’ 101.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
