Arizona @ Los Angeles preview

Dodger Stadium

Last Meeting ( Aug 31, 2012 ) Arizona 4, LA Dodgers 3

A week ago, Los Angeles appeared primed to make a charge at first-place San Francisco in the National League West. Arizona is certainly doing its best to keep that from happening. The pesky Diamondbacks beat the Dodgers 4-3 in 11 innings on Friday, giving them eight straight wins against Los Angeles. Arizona moved 8 1/2 games behind San Francisco with the win, while the Dodgers remained 4 1/2 games back. Los Angeles center fielder Matt Kemp went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts after missing two games with a shoulder injury, and the Dodgers dropped to 2-5 since acquiring Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Nick Punto and Carl Crawford from Boston.

With rosters expanding Saturday, the Diamondbacks are expected to add infielder Cody Ransom and activate shortstop Willie Bloomquist and pitchers Josh Collmenter and Takashi Saito from the disabled list. Outfielder Adam Eaton was named the Pacific Coast League MVP, but he might not be recalled from Triple-A Reno since he’s not on the 40-man roster. The Dodgers are still in a holding pattern with closer Kenley Jansen, who threw a 25-pitch bullpen session on Friday. Jansen, who has been out since Tuesday with an irregular heartbeat, is scheduled to meet with doctors on Tuesday to determine his status for the rest of the season.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Tyler Skaggs (1-1, 2.92 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Josh Beckett (0-1, 4.76)

Skaggs figures to stick in the rotation after Arizona traded Joe Saunders to Baltimore last weekend. The rookie gave up three runs (two earned) over 5 2/3 innings last Monday against the Reds in his second career start.

Beckett is making his Dodger Stadium debut after allowing three runs over 5 2/3 innings last Monday against the Rockies in his first outing since being traded from Boston. Beckett threw 108 pitches and struck out six with three walks. He’s 0-5 with a 7.17 ERA in his previous seven starts and has not won since July 15.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Diamondbacks are 12-3 in their last 15 games at Dodger Stadium.

2. The Dodgers’ losing streak against Arizona ties their longest since dropping eight in a row against the Diamondbacks from July 2-Sept. 29, 2005.

3. Gonzalez is 5-for-28 (.179) with three RBIs since hitting a three-run homer in his first at-bat with the Dodgers.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
