Chicago @ San Diego preview

Petco Park

Last Meeting ( Aug 6, 2012 ) Chi. Cubs 0, San Diego 2

The San Diego Padres and the Chicago Cubs have similar plans for the rest of the season - integrate the young players while winning as many games as they can. The Padres are doing the better job of that winning part at the moment with victories in two of their last three games, including a 2-0 triumph in Monday’s series opener. The Cubs made a move on Sunday by calling up their top two prospects and the results have been mixed.

Top outfield prospect Brett Jackson had two hits in his debut on Sunday but went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts and a rough play in the outfield on Monday. Josh Vitters, who was called up along with Jackson, went 0-for-3 in his first start on Monday but did make a sparkling defensive play at third base. The wins have yet to come, with Chicago dropping six straight. San Diego recorded nine extra-base hits in its win on Sunday and added three more Monday as Carlos Quentin and Cameron Maybin each doubled during a rally. Yonder Alonso has also been hot as part of the Padres’ youth movement.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Brooks Raley (0-0, -.-- ERA) vs. Pirates RH Ross Ohlendorf (3-2, 6.27)

Raley will make his major league debut on Tuesday as the 14th rookie to appear for Chicago this season. The 24-year old was the organization’s Pitcher of the Month for July and has steadily improved this season after starting off at Double-A. He was promoted to Triple-A after eight starts and has gone 4-8 with a 3.26 ERA in 14 turns. Raley posted a 2.12 ERA in five July starts for Iowa.

Ohlendorf has lost two straight starts and is coming off a disastrous outing at Cincinnati last week in which he allowed six runs and six hits in 1 2/3 innings. The veteran right-hander turns 30 on Wednesday and will be looking to sharpen his command after issuing three walks against the Reds last Thursday. Ohlendorf has made five career starts against Chicago in his career, going 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Cubs are expected to place Matt Garza (triceps) on the DL Tuesday to open a roster spot for Raley.

2. San Diego owner John Moores has agreed to sell the team to a group headed by San Diego businessman Ron Fowler. The sale still has to be approved by Major League Baseball.

3. Chicago 1B Anthony Rizzo, who made his major league debut with the Padres last season before being traded to the Cubs in January, went 0-for-4 on Monday and is batting .161 (9-for-56) in his career at Petco Park.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
