Arizona @ Los Angeles preview

Dodger Stadium

Last Meeting ( Jul 31, 2012 ) Arizona 8, LA Dodgers 2

The Diamondbacks didn’t make any major deals at the trade deadline, but they’re making their move in the National League West race. Arizona stands 3 1/2 games behind first-place San Francisco after winning nine of its last 12 games, including the first two games of its series with host Los Angeles. The Diamondbacks have won five straight against the Dodgers, who have been outscored 15-4 in the first two games of the series while falling one game behind the Giants.

Arizona acquired reliever Matt Albers and outfielder Scott Podsednik from the Red Sox for reliever Craig Breslow on Monday, while Los Angeles made another big splash by getting outfielder Shane Victorino from the Phillies for pitchers Josh Lindblom and Ethan Martin. The Dodgers also added third baseman Hanley Ramirez and reliever Brandon League in the past week, but they failed in their bid to acquire Ryan Dempster, who was traded to Texas. Dodgers’ starters have allowed 12 runs in 11 innings over the past two games, but they’re hoping to get Ted Lilly (shoulder) back in a few weeks.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Patrick Corbin (2-4, 4.15 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Stephen Fife (0-0, 1.46)

Corbin was recalled from Triple-A Tucson to replace Josh Collmenter in the Diamondbacks’ starting rotation after the team decided to use Collmenter in long relief. Corbin has a 2.84 ERA in 79 1/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A and has thrown 39 innings covering 10 appearances (five starts) in the majors.

Fife is making his third major-league start and figures to stick in the rotation until Lilly returns from the disabled list. Fife has made a strong first impression with the Dodgers while making two quality starts. He gave up one run over 6 1/3 innings last Friday against the Giants.

WALK-OFFS

1. Arizona C Miguel Montero has reached base in 22 of his last 31 plate appearances, going 11-for-21 (.524) with nine walks. He has also been hit by a pitch twice during that span.

2. Manager Don Mattingly said League will join Ronald Belisario as the Dodgers' primary eighth-inning relievers, with Kenley Jansen remaining as the team’s closer.

3. The Diamondbacks are 14-1 this season when 1B Paul Goldschmidt homers.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
