Arizona @ Los Angeles preview

Dodger Stadium

Last Meeting ( Jul 30, 2012 ) Arizona 7, LA Dodgers 2

The Arizona Diamondbacks are doing their best to make the National League West a three-team race. Arizona has won eight of its last 11 games to move 3 1/2 games behind Los Angeles and San Francisco, who are tied for first place after both teams lost Monday. Arizona's Chris Johnson made a strong first impression with his new team on Monday, hitting his second career grand slam in a 7-2 win over the Dodgers. The Diamondbacks hope Johnson’s acquisition from Houston fills the team’s need for a power-hitting third baseman.

Los Angeles bolstered its bullpen late Monday by acquiring reliever Brandon League from Seattle for two minor league prospects - outfielder Leon Landry and reliever Logan Bawcom. League, who has a 3.63 ERA over 44 2/3 innings this season, will likely serve as a setup man for closer Kenley Jansen, who has 20 saves and a 1.89 ERA in 47 games. While general manager Ned Colletti continues to upgrade the roster, Matt Kemp keeps on hitting. The MVP candidate is 25-for-72 (.347) with 10 home runs and 16 RBI since coming off the disabled list on July 13.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Wade Miley (11-6, 3.11 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Chris Capuano (10-6, 3.13)

Miley, who set a team rookie record with his 11th win on July 21 against the Astros, is 2-1 with a 3.50 ERA over his last three starts. He’s gone 1-3 with a 5.92 in his last four road starts. Arizona’s lone All-Star selection, Miley is a strong candidate for the National League Rookie of the Year award. He's 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in two starts against the Dodgers this season.

Capuano is looking to rebound after allowing a season-high six earned runs over 4 1/3 innings last Thursday against the Cardinals. He can tie his 2011 win total with a victory. Capuano is 2-5 with a 4.31 ERA in nine career games (eight starts) against Arizona, and he’s 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA in two starts this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Diamondbacks designated 1B Lyle Overbay for assignment to make room for Johnson.

2. Dodgers SS Luis Cruz went 0-for-4 on Monday, ending his career-high 12-game hitting streak.

3. Arizona is 8-3 in its last 11 games at Dodger Stadium.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
