Inter Miami is coming home from a trip to the West Coast, where they drew 3-3 with San Jose on Wednesday. And if the past is anything to go by, that means we’re in for an interesting match.
That’s because the aging legs of Inter Miami’s star players typically don’t perform as well after a cross-country trip. They either have to sit out the match, or they’re rusty for large parts of it. This applies especially to midfielder Sergio Busquets and defender Jordi Alba, both of whom played a full 90 minutes.
It doesn’t help that the Herons aren’t defending well right now. They’ve shipped seven goals in the past week, losing 4-1 at Minnesota last Saturday. It’s the fourth time in five matches their opponent has scored at least three goals, and the absence of goalkeeper Drake Callender could be a big reason why.
Their opponents on Sunday have found their shooting boots and are set to take advantage. Orlando City has scored three goals in three of their last four MLS outings, and that’s not including a 5-0 win over Tampa Bay in the US Open Cup last week.
And while they had a stretch of five matches that saw four scoreless draws, fixture congestion has loosened up their defense slightly. A 3-1 win over Charlotte on Wednesday followed a 3-3 draw with New England last weekend, a team that has scored just 12 goals this campaign.
Both teams average more than 4.65 shots on target per match, and possess attacking weapons that can put the game away at any time. Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez will be problems for Orlando, while Martin Ojeda and Luis Muriel have a combined 13 goals in league play.
Inter Miami won 5-0 at home the last time these teams met, and the Lions will want to seek revenge. The fatigue issues for the hosts will allow Orlando to bag a couple of goals, while Messi and Suarez will find a way to break down the visiting defense.
