Atlas has struggled defensively for quite some time. They’ve kept just two clean sheets in 2025, the last of which came back on the first day of February. In contrast, they’ve conceded 3+goals in seven of their last 13 matches.
Since Liga MX began the new campaign, Atlas have surrendered multiple goals in all three matches, with eight conceded in total. Now they must face a rested Lionel Messi and the danger that comes with him being upset.
After all, it was his suspension — along with Jordi Alba’s — that partially led to the Herons engaging in a scoreless draw over the weekend with Cincinnati. It was their second outing in two weeks against the same side, sandwiching a 5-1 thrashing of the New York Red Bulls where Messi was involved in three goals.
When Messi has gotten time to rest, he’s been lethal since joining the Herons. He’s also now got his personal bodyguard from the Argentinian national team, Rodrigo de Paul, after a transfer from Atletico Madrid was completed this past week. This should only allow him even more freedom without fear of being consistently fouled.
Atlas were overwhelmed by Monterrey at the weekend, conceding 10 shots on target and 25 shots in total. Inter Miami will have a field day with their defense, with Messi pulling the strings.

Diego Gonzalez is an aggressive winger who has a “ready, fire, aim” mentality for Atlas. He averaged 2.11 shots per 90 minutes in the second half of the last Liga MX season.
And after assisting twice from a wingback position in the opening match, he’s taken seven shots in the last two since being moved to a winger role. Seeing he’s attempted 35% of their shots in those two outings, I like him to have at least three in this game.
Messi’s on fire, and has either scored or assisted on 10 of Inter Miami’s last 13 goals. He’s rested, he’s ticked off, and he’s going to be firing early and often. Atlas have given up hat tricks in each of their last two matches, and it’s hard for me to see Messi not getting at least one.
