Bayern Munich vs Boca Juniors picks and predictions
My Bayern Munich vs Boca Juniors best bet: Boca Juniors team total Over 0.5 (-120 at bet365)
Bayern Munich couldn’t have had an easier tournament debut, logging 10 goals against Auckland City. That result was a huge discussion point, but it's still difficult to gauge where the German side sits, something that will be easier to measure against Boca Juniors.
Boca snagged a point in a hard-fought draw against Benfica. That felt harsh in many ways, with Benfica only getting the equalizer in the 84th minute and Boca playing with 10 men for half the game, finishing with just nine players, thanks to red cards for Ander Herrera and Jorge Figal.
This is a feisty team and one that is very capable of getting physical, pushing the boundaries of the game’s laws, and often overstepping them. They'll have been told to calm down, as those red cards cost them three points last time out, but how they'll actually respond is unknown.
One thing we do know is that Boca's fanbase will show up in a big way. Boca has gone into games incredibly well supported by their fans who have travelled the relatively short journey to be here. We've seen that support be an advantage during this tournament and could be the difference in this match.
We didn’t see Bayern’s defense get tested at all by Auckland City, who could barely get it out of their own box, let alone half, but Boca will be a different beast. This is a team that scored twice against a strong Benfica team, which narrowly finished runner-up in their domestic league. Miguel Merentiel started up front against the Portuguese side and scored, and there's a chance that Edinson Cavani, the talented veteran striker, could also return to action.
No team in the Bundesliga conceded fewer goals than Bayern this season, but that has more to do with their ability to keep possession than with their talent in the backline. New signing Jonathan Tah is an improvement, and we’ll likely see Dayot Upamecano alongside him. However, this is still a defense that doesn’t feel rock-solid.
When you combine the defensive partnership that's never played alongside each other before in front of a stadium packed with rabid Boca fans, it’s clear there’s a very good chance the talented Argentinian side find the back of the net.
Bayern Munich vs Boca Juniors same-game parlay (SGP)
We’re backing Bayern’s Michael Olise to either score or assist. The wideman has been excellent for the Bavarian club since arriving last summer from Crystal Palace and came into this competition with 17 goals and 17 assists to his name.
Against a far inferior Auckland City team, he managed to score two and set up a further two, despite being on the pitch for just 46 minutes. That just underlines the incredible run of form he’s on, with seven goals and seven assists in his past eight games for club and country.
The final leg sees us backing Lautaro Blanco to commit two or more fouls. The 26-year-old only arrived at Boca last season but has been their first-choice left back for the bulk of the season, which sets him up to be 1-on-1 with Olise, who comes into this in red-hot form.
Although Blanco has averaged just 1.33 fouls committed per 90 minutes played in the Argentine league this season, that will surely increase against a player of Olise’s talent and trickery.
