Why does Christopher Nolan (Dark Knight/Inception) keep casting unattractive women?

An actress like Rachel McAdams would have been perfect for the female lead in The Dark Knight, but instead Nolan casted Maggie Gyllenhaal.

The Dark Knight was an excellent movie but it got so annoying how all three male leads were either fighting over or talking about how beautiful a woman was who was, at best, a 6.

One of the villains in the next Batman movie (The Dark Knight Rises) is Catwoman. Catwoman is supposed to be sex on a stick. Unless you have the hormones of a 16 year old boy or have been in prison for decades, Anne Hathaway is not sex on a stick. Hell, she isn’t even attractive.

I realize that Nolan has a fetish for ugly women (hell, just look at his wife) , but why does he insist on casting average looking women for roles that call for a MUCH better looking woman?

First off: that picture has been air brushed to the point where it doesn’t even really look like her.

Secondly: just because I think an actress shouldn’t be casted for a role that calls for a very attractive woman doesn’t mean I wouldn’t fuck her.

THIS is an ugly duckling?

This and this are "both much more attractive" than this?

2. I could look for hours and not find a good picture of Gyllenhall. To me, there isn’t that much a difference between the picture I showed of Hathaway and how she looks walking down the red carpet.

3. That is applicable to acting. Not to someone’s attractiveness.  Unless they were intentionally made to look much more ugly (i.e. Monster), an 25+ year old actress isn’t going to go from slightly above average looking in every role she has been in to looking like pure sex.  

4. The whole time I was rooting that they wouldn’t get there in time.

5. That kind of sucks, but like you said we can’t really know how it will turn out until we see it. 5 is a lot though.

I don’t really think saying things that prompt others to question your sexuality is really considered “spiting” someone else.

McAdams actually has more experience in action movies than Gyllenhaal does.

And even if she didn’t: there are plenty of actresses that do that are also about 87 times better looking than Gyllenhaal.

Actually I said they were, at best, 6’s and were not attractive. Nowhere did I say they were “repulsive.”

Agree with you on the other chicks though.  Going back to Momento, he casts the same kind of skank in each movie.

The anomaly was a 20 year old Scarlett Johansson in The Prestige.

The only choices out there aren’t casting a woman that can act decently and looks like a 6 and casting a woman that acts like a super model and looks like a 9.5.  There are other opinions available.

Also while I don’t agree with the decision to cast Hathaway as Catwoman, I can see how many would think it was a good choice. However, the casting of Gyllenhaal remains a fucking mystery. How any sane and sober person would cast her for that role (or think it was a good decision) is beyond me. If that droopy-faced bitch wasn’t in it The Dark Knight would be damn near perfect.
