After a number of wild twists and turns, including an early exit from the event by defending champ Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay walked away as the Memorial Tournament winner on Sunday.

Cantlay outlasted Collin Morikawa in a playoff to earn his fourth PGA Tour victory and it marked the second time in three years he won the Memorial Tournament after first capturing a title in 2019.

Here were the pre-final round Memorial Tournament odds at the new and improved Muirfield Village. The tournament ran from June 3-6, 2021.

The Memorial Tournament favorites

Rahm entered as the favorite to win The Memorial Tournament at +1,000 after winning last year's event. As the No. 3 in the Official World Golf Rankings, Rahm looked like he was on his way to back-to-back victories but had to unexpectedly pull out early after learning he had tested positive for COVID-19. Rahm had a six-stroke lead at the time he was forced to withdraw on Saturday.

Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, and Bryson DeChambeau were all tied for second on the odds board at +1,400. McIlroy, the recent Wells Fargo Championship winner, finished T18 a couple of weeks after finishing 49th at the PGA Championship.

Spieth was coming off a runner-up finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge, which was his fourth Top-10 finish in five events. He tied McIlroy at the Memorial Tournament at T18.

DeChambeau, meanwhile, won the Memorial in 2018 but came into this event struggling, finishing T38 or worse in four of five events. His struggles continued, as he also finished T18 at 1-under.

Rounding out the Top 5 at +1,600 was Justin Thomas, the No. 2 in the OWGR, and Morikawa, who won the Workday Charity Classic last year — the other PGA Tour event that was held at Muirfield in 2020. Morikawa lost his grip at the top late, allowing Cantlay to pull through win the playoff win, while Thomas finished T42 in what was his fourth straight tournament placing outside the Top 25.

2021 Memorial Tournament course

The Memorial Tournament was played at Muirfield Village in Dublin, OH. Established in 1974, the club was founded by Jack Nicklaus, and named for Muirfield, Scotland, where he won his first British Open in 1966.

Muirfield Village is home to two golf courses, and the club's signature course hosted The Memorial Tournament. The course is a 7,392-yard par 72, featuring bentgrass fairways and greens. Following consecutive events in 2020, Muirfield underwent major renovations, including a full rebuild of all the greens and bunkers, an alteration of fairway widths and a redesign of the par-5 fifth hole.

Memorial Tournament 2020 winner

Jon Rahm won The Memorial Tournament in 2020, shooting a 9-under 279 for the weekend, finishing three strokes ahead of Ryan Palmer.

2021 Memorial Tournament payout

The Memorial Tournament paid out a purse of $9.3 million, with Cantlay taking home $1.674 million for the win.

How To Bet On PGA Tour Odds

The most popular way to bet on golf is by simply picking the winner, which is also referred to as outright. There are plenty of other ways to wager, however. Some of the more popular markets include head-to-head betting, where sportsbooks pair up two golfers and you simply choose who you think will have the lower score over the course of the weekend or for one round only.

There are also 3-way betting markets (choose the best golfer among three choices) and group betting (choose the best golfer amongst a group of players).

Other ways to wager include Top-5/Top-10/Top-20 finish, top golfer by nationality, to make the cut/to not make the cut, and the leader after each round. Then, of course, there's the popular prop bet of whether or not there will be a hole in one at the tournament.
