Senators vs Islanders Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

The Ottawa Senators enter Sunday's contest off back-to-back wins, and Chris Faria believes they are in for a hot start against an Islanders side that's been a bad bet in the opening stanza.

The Ottawa Senators are on a nice little roll with two straight wins and a 4-1-1 record over their last six games. They’ll look to keep their win streak going when they welcome the New York Islanders to Canadian Tire Centre this evening.

Quick starts have been crucial for the Sens, who are 10-1-0 when scoring first this season. I’ll hone in on a first-period prop in my Islanders vs Senators predictions and NHL picks for Sunday, December 8.

My Senators analysis
The Ottawa Senators picked up their second straight victory on Saturday with a 3-1 win against the Predators as Tim Stutzle notched two assists and Linus Ullmark made 37 saves.

Neither team got on the board until the second period when Jacob Bernard-Docker broke the ice for Ottawa, but I’m expecting a quicker start for the Sens this evening against the New York Islanders, who have been sluggish out of the gate.

Ottawa has outscored its opponents 26-20 in the opening frame, tied for the eighth-best goal differential in the first period among all teams. New York has trended the other way with a –1 differential while scoring just 19 goals in the opening 20 minutes — tied for the sixth-fewest in the NHL.

That trend has been even more pronounced of late as the Islanders have been outscored 7-2 in the first period over their last six games, going 0-4-2 on the first-period moneyline.

According to our NHL betting trends for Islanders vs. Senators, Ottawa has covered the first-period puck line in 21 of its last 39 games at home (+2.15 Units / 4% ROI).

Senators vs Islanders Odds analysis

The Sens opened at –145 on home ice and saw the number slide even higher by late Saturday night, going as far as –163 at some books.

The clubs have been pretty comparable at 5-on-5, with the Islanders owning 51.55% of the expected goals and the Senators at 51.40%. However, the hosts boast a significant advantage on special teams which could make all the difference tonight.

Ottawa’s power play is clicking at 25.6% (8th) while New York ranks dead last on both the man advantage (11.5%) and penalty kill (65%).

The total for the game opened at 6 goals with both the Sens and Isles hitting the Over in five of their last seven contests.
