We've got a busy Tuesday night of NHL betting with seven games on tap. We break down the hockey odds for a trio of contests headlined by a player prop featuring the NHL's top scorer in Connor McDavid, and a play on one of the league's best teams in the Vegas Golden Knights.
Here are our best free NHL picks and predictions for Tuesday, February 9.
NHL Picks for Today
Detroit Red Wings vs Florida Panthers
Fool us once shame on you, fool us three times shame on me. That's how we feel as we consider backing the Florida Panthers at home against the Red Wings tonight. We have taken the Panthers on the puck line against the Wings three times this year and have lost each bet, most recently on Sunday when Detroit won outright by a score of 4-1.
That's a far cry from the Panthers' dominance in the head-to-head last year, when they won all four meetings by a total score of 19-6.
Despite winning on Sunday, the Red Wings still look like the worst team in the league with a 3-8-2 record. They rank 24th in goals allowed with 3.44 goals per game and are 30th in goals scored with 2.0 gpg. They also rank among the Bottom-5 teams in the league when it comes to both the power play and the penalty kill.
Even with that loss, the Panthers are 6-1-2 this season. With the Red Wings 1-7 in their last eight games following a win, we're expecting them to return to their mediocre ways tonight.
While we're a bit gun-shy about taking the Panthers on the puck line again we are going to put our money on them on the regulation moneyline.
PREDICTION: Three-way moneyline Florida (-140)
Edmonton Oilers vs Ottawa Senators
These teams clashed last night with the Oilers winning 3-1. That's the third time in the last ten days that Edmonton has defeated Ottawa by multiple goals. Matt Murray was in nets for the Senators yesterday, which means backup Marcus Hogberg will almost certainly get the nod today.
While Murray's play for Ottawa this season has been subpar, Hogberg has been even worse. The Swede is 0-4 with a 4.54 goals-against average and an .844 save percentage, and in two starts against the Oilers last week he surrendered nine goals on just 47 shots.
The Oilers certainly have flaws too, but elite offensive talent isn't one of them with two-time Art Ross winner Connor McDavid once again leading the league in scoring with 27 points.
McDavid had an assist last night, which is actually a bad game by his ridiculously high standards. Prior to that contest, the 24-year-old superstar had scored at least two points in seven-straight games, including a five-point performance against Hoglund and the Sens on January 31. Back McDavid to add another multi-point game to his resume today.
PREDICTION: Connor McDavid to score 2+ points - Yes (-120)
Anaheim Ducks vs Vegas Golden Knights
The Golden Knights continue to look like one of the best teams in the league and have cruised to a 7-1-1 start to the year. They dominate puck possession, ranking first in the league in Fenwick For percentage while ranking sixth in the league in scoring with 3.56 goals per game and fourth in yielding just 2.33 gpg.
The Ducks have a solid record of 5-5-2, which is a bit surprising considering how awful they have been on the offensive end of the ice. Anaheim is averaging just 1.85 goals per game and has gone a pathetic 2-30 on the power play.
That's bad news against a strong Vegas penalty-kill unit and today's projected starting goalie in Marc-Andre Fleury. The three-time Stanley Cup champion is a perfect 4-0 with a 1.25 GAA and a save percentage of .944 this season.
The Golden Knights are terrific at home, going 21-6 in their last 27 games T-Mobile Arena, and have owned this head-to-head series. The Knights are also 9-1 in the last 10 games versus Anaheim and have covered the puck line as a favorite in five of the last six contests in Vegas. Take the puck line again.
PREDICTION: Vegas -1.5
