Jets vs Stars Predictions, Picks, and Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

Two of the best in the West will spotlight a big night on the ice as the Winnipeg Jets head to Dallas to take on the Stars who are on a 9-1 heater. The Jets’ six-game losing skid is in the rearview mirror as they have won four in a row, but they enter tonight as a +125 road dog. 

With a tight game likely coming and Winnipeg surprisingly giving up a ton of shots over the last 30 days, is betting on shots a better route tonight for profitable plus-money NHL picks?

My analysis

With both teams entering night playing winning hockey and each club getting its goaltending issues back in order, the best approach in this game is for shot opportunities from the Dallas Stars.

Over the last 10 games at 5-on-5, only two other teams are allowing more shots on goal than the Winnipeg Jets who gave up 48 to the Preds on Tuesday. The likely close game script should also keep both offenses in shooting mode, giving more outs for potential Overs.

With three lines of solid forwards and the last change at their disposal, there are a lot of players to look at for SOG Overs from the Stars — but Jamie Benn continues to be undervalued despite his offensive successes.

The former MVP has 12 goals and 12 assists over his last 17 while averaging 2.82 shots per game, going 11-6 O/U on his 2.5-shot prop. More recently he’s 7-3 to the Over across his last 10 and is paying a very tasty +115 to get three or more shots tonight.

Benn is the veteran on the third line with young skaters Wyatt Johnston and Logan Stankoven while also playing in-tight on the first power-play unit. He’ll get plenty of shooting opportunities tonight, and with a close game projected, looking for a plus-money SOG prop might be a better route for bettors than point props.

Benn is being priced on the player he has been all season as opposed to what he's done since the All-Star break. His role is cemented and he is a skater I see hitting his Over 2.5 SOG prop at 50% or better going forward. The Jets are also a sneaky good shooting matchup which might not be fully priced in.

The market is moving toward the home side and I have to agree. The Jets are just four games removed from a six-game losing streak and they haven't been a great defensive team at 5-on-5 of late.

Hellebuyck has been streaky but Dallas leads the West for a reason, and when Jake Oettinger is on, this team cannot be stopped. The Stars have also owned the season series taking all three games while allowing just three goals.
