NFL Preseason Week 1 roster notes for Friday, Aug. 14

Dolphins vs Commanders

Miami Dolphins fans will get their first look at new QB Malik Willis tonight. The former Green Bay Packers backup signed a 3-year, $67.5 million deal in the offseason as the Fins parted ways with Tua Tagovailoa.

Jayden Daniels is not expected to suit up for the Washington Commanders. Expect QB2 Marcus Mariota to start, with Sam Hartman and rookie Athan Kaliakmanis battling it out for the third-string job.

Broncos vs Falcons

While Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton said he plans to give his starters some early snaps tonight, Bo Nix will be held out entirely. The star QB suffered an ankle injury during the playoffs.

Tua Tagovailoa is expected to start his first game with the Atlanta Falcons. Meanwhile, the QB he's battling for the No. 1 job — Michael Penix Jr. — is being held out as he continues to recover from an ACL injury.

Tagovailoa is expected to have his full complement of offensive weapons on the field, including Bijan Robinson and Drake London.

Buccaneers vs Jets

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be a bit short at both quarterback and running back tonight.

Baker Mayfield is expected to be held back as the incumbent No. 1 starter, while backup Jake Browning is nursing a back injury. Connor Bazelak and Jalon Daniels are next on the QB depth chart.

Bucky Irving and Kenny Gainwell could also both be held out entirely, or one of them could see very limited action. Sean Tucker and Josh Williams are the "next men up."

Meanwhile, New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has declared that "everyone's playing" tonight. That means we'll see QB1 Geno Smith back in a Jets uniform, with Breece Hall behind him and Garrett Wilson out wide.

Glenn mentioned "25-30 plays" as the guideline for how long his veterans will be out on the field.
