The Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants enter Week 2 after disappointing openers, but one of these NFC East rivals can crack the win column on Sunday.

The Cowboys are home favorites with a rest edge after playing last Thursday. That prompted some line movement towards “America’s Team.”

I size up the opening spread and total and give my early Giants vs. Cowboys predictions and NFL picks for September 14.

Giants vs Cowboys predictions

Here are our early thoughts on the spread and total for this week’s game. We will have a full game preview (with a best bet and SGP) later in the week.

Early Giants vs Cowboys spread pick: Dallas -4.5

The look-ahead lines listed the Dallas Cowboys as a 4.5-point favorite in this Week 2 game, but the Micah Parsons trade knocked the spread to -3 before Week 1’s result. The Week 2 spread officially opened at Cowboys -4.5 on Sunday night, and the market has moved as high as -5 at some shops.

The extra rest and prep give an edge to Dallas, which stood toe-to-toe with the defending champs in Week 1.

The Cowboys offense put up more than 300 yards on that championship defense (minus Jalen Carter), getting solid balance between the pass and the run. In fact, heading into Monday night, Dallas boasted the No. 1 success rate per handoff (61.9%) of Week 1.

The New York Giants’ defense was very “bend but don’t break” against Washington in the opener. New York gave up just 21 points on 432 yards, watching the Commanders gain 6.6 yards per play. More than half of those gains came on the ground, with Washington rumbling for 220 rushing yards.

Dallas is committed to the ground game under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. My early instincts say take the rested team ready to run the ball.

Early Giants vs Cowboys total pick: Over 44.5

The Giants’ Week 1 result could have been a lot worse. The Commanders piled on the yards but missed a few would-be scoring plays, including an overthrown ball to a wide-open Terry McLaurin.

If those numbers hold water, the Cowboys will be able to move the chains in Week 2.

The passing game flexed its muscles in Week 1, with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens making plays for Dak Prescott. The lengthy weather delay at Philly in Week 1 cooled off this attack, but put that air show on the fast indoor track of Jerry’s World, and the points will come.

New York’s new QB situation looked shaky in Week 1. Russell Wilson passed for only 168 yards and head coach Brian Daboll told the media he wouldn’t commit to a QB for Week 2 right now. Should Wilson get the nod, he’s set up to succeed.

This Cowboys secondary couldn’t stop the Eagles’ passing game, allowing the third-highest success rate allowed per dropback of Week 1. New defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus exclusively ran zone coverage and Russ is one of the best QBs versus zone defenses.

I’m leaning to the Over in this NFC East encounter.
