As rocky as the first five weeks have been for Justin Herbert & Co., facing the Chiefs (-8.5) coming off a bye may be when the Chargers truly hit rock bottom.

The winless Los Angeles Chargers visit a rested Kansas City Chiefs team coming off its bye, and apparently things can still get worse for the Bolts. Kansas City is an 8.5-point favorite with a total of 42.5.

My early Chargers vs. Chiefs predictions, leans, and NFL picks back K.C. to prolong L.A.'s nightmare start to the season.

Early Chargers vs Chiefs spread pick: Chiefs -8.5

Kalshi probability: 51%

The Los Angeles Chargers are broken in more ways than one. They're 0–5 ATS, having scored 17 or fewer points in four of five games.

Their offensive line is falling apart, helping explain why Justin Herbert has been sacked 17 times, the second-most in the NFL. Rashawn Slater is on the injured reserve, while Joe Alt missed Sunday's game.

Add a banged-up Ladd McConkey, and this offense simply has nothing going for it right now. It’s all bad!

A rested Kansas City Chiefs defense, ranking seventh in yards per play allowed, should keep that "attack" grounded.

The offensive gap is enormous, with Kansas City ranking first in yards per play while L.A. sits 24th in yards per play and 26th in third-down conversion percentage.

Back home for the first time in four weeks, the 4–0 Chiefs look reinvigorated after a down season. I expect them to smell blood and pull away from a divisional rival that’s barely hanging on.

Early Chargers vs Chiefs total pick: Under 42.5

Kalshi probability: 53%

The Chargers are 4-1 to the Under, thanks to an incompetent offense that struggles to move the football and sustain drives.

Their defense hasn’t been a total disaster, though. It actually qualifies as good, ranking in the Top 10 in yards per play allowed, opponent third-down conversion percentage, and opponent red-zone TD percentage.

Kansas City ranks fifth in red-zone defense, setting up a potentially busy afternoon for the kickers.

Recent meetings have also been low-scoring, with four of the last five finishing below 40 combined points. Both teams also rank in the Top 10 in rushing-play percentage, helping keep the clock moving.

L.A.’s offensive limitations should ultimately prevent any serious fireworks.
