Vanderbilt's meteoric rise up the SEC pecking order has stunned just about everyone – including oddsmakers. But outside Nashville, nobody's banking on a 2025 repeat.
The Commodores blew past their Vegas win total for a second straight season, going from two wins to 10 in just two years thanks largely to the heroics of quarterback Diego Pavia. His departure leaves a gigantic hole in the Vanderbilt offense, and that's not the only issue this team faces in a perennially brutal SEC.
Here's a look at the recent history of Vanderbilt win totals, along with predictions on whether the Commodores will surpass or fall short of their 2026 number of 5.5:

Covers expert betting predictions
Brad Powers
The Commodores are coming off the best season in school history. They lost arguably the top player in school history in quarterback Diego Pavia. They are starting a true freshman at quarterback. I bet under 6.5 wins early this off-season but would lean over 5.5 wins at current.
Rob Paul
Build the statue of Diego Pavia. Before he showed up with Jerry Kill and Tim Beck, Clark Lea’s record at Vanderbilt was 9-27. After going 17-9 the last two years with Pavia, it’s a total reset for the Commodores with five-star freshman QB Jared Curtis expected to start.
While Curtis has the makings of a future pro, asking him to carry an offense that’s No. 115 in returning production (38%) is putting a lot on a 19-year-old's shoulders. Vandy does bring back Junior Sherrill and Sedrick Alexander, but it's leaning heavily on transfers and first-year starters elsewhere.
The defense wasn’t all that consistent last year, and it doesn’t return a ton of proven players, either. Beyond Jordan Matthews, Miles Capers, and Martel Hight, there’s not much by way of All-SEC talent. But Vanderbilt desperately needs its defense to shine if it’s going to reach bowl eligibility.
Colby Marchio
Despite losing star quarterback Diego Pavia to the NFL, I do not think Clark Lea is going to let this program fall back into what it used to be. Now, I am not saying Vanderbilt is going to win another 10 games, but I do think the Commodores will be bowling in December.
Offensively, they bring in the No. 1 pocket passer in the 2026 recruiting class, Jared Curtis, one of the highest profile recruits in program history. The true freshman has some massive shoes to fill after the guy before him ended up in New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony.

Eli Landers, The Vanderbilt Hustler
Their schedule is not terribly hard, and the team’s defense (which was very underrated last year) is largely returned. Our run game and offensive line will also be established veterans which will give Curtis breathing room and he will get better as the season goes on.

🔑 Key takeaways
- Emphatic cashes: When this team goes Over its regular season win total, it really goes Over. Vanderbilt made good on its 2024 total by 3 1/2 wins, and was even better last year with a 4 1/2-win improvement over the Vegas threshold. The Commodores have surpassed their win total by an average of three wins in its five conversions since 2008.
- Underestimated: Oddsmakers have tended to encourage Over betting on the Commodores by keeping win totals conservative. And it has worked for the most part, with Over as the favored play in five of seven seasons entering 2026. That trend continues this season, with the O5.5 at a whopping -160.
- Feeling lucky?: Vanderbilt is one of a handful of Power 4 conference teams with two numbers realistically in play. The O6.5 is actually priced reasonably at +140 if you're looking to spice up your win total play; conversely, if you'd rather take a safer play and like Vandy to finish with six or fewer wins, the U6.5 is set at -170.
How Vanderbilt win totals are priced
This might be one of the most difficult teams in the SEC to handicap for win totals, and it has everything to do with the "Pavia Factor".
He and several other key offensive players are no longer with the Commodores, and it's difficult to imagine a team with one double-digit win season in 122 years of college football overcoming those absences easily. Add in home games vs. Alabama, Tennessee and Ole Miss and road dates with Georgia, Auburn and Florida, and things get dicey.
Vandy, which went 6-2 in conference play in 2025, has an SEC win total of 3.5 this season, with the Over at +100 and the Under at -120.
Vanderbilt was 10-0 SU in the regular season when running the ball 25 or more times, and 0-3 when it didn't.
