Despite high-profile wins on the recruiting trail, highlighted by five-star freshman QB Faizon Brandon, Josh Heupel’s seat seems to be getting warm. And unless Brandon hits the ground running in the veer and shoot this season, winning 8+ games is going to be difficult.
The offense is inexperienced, ranking outside the top 50 in returning production (58%), and is expected to have an 18-year-old under center. Even with playmakers like DeSean Bishop, Mike Matthews, and Braylon Staley back, Brandon could get off to a bumpy start with Georgia Tech on the road and Texas in the Vols’ SEC opener.
The defense will need to carry the load early, which is a big ask considering new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles normally takes a season or two to get things going. Unless a few of the defensive transfers hit in a big way, Tennessee likely won’t field a top 20 defense.

Getting to avoid Ole Miss, Georgia, and Oklahoma is a massive plus for this Tennessee team, especially with Texas and Alabama both coming to Knoxville. If the Vols can win one, or even both, of those games, they will be in great shape.
Their toughest road test comes on Nov. 14 at Kyle Field. Outside of that, I think 8+ wins at plus money is well worth the risk for a Tennessee team with a ton of upside on the offensive side of the ball despite having very few seniors.
Defensively, Josh Heupel brought in a new coordinator to address the issues that plagued the secondary last season. He also attacked the transfer portal, bringing in 12 transfers, including eight defensive backs.
