Increasingly and undeniably, the NFL pulls from college football innovations, covering up the NFL’s lack of creativity with collegiate absurdities.

With that in mind, this Thursday night could present a chance to see the NFL of the future. The Rice Owls have an offense so unique that it presently defies any quick name or brief description.

And that should be enough to get past the Charlotte 49ers, a struggling team in the first and now one with a defense that should be lost at kickoff.

Our best Rice vs Charlotte SGP for Week 4

If you barely understand the offense you are facing, let alone on a short week, that is enough of a disadvantage to be dismissed outright.

And Charlotte’s defense is already bad.

A few chunk plays from Rice should spur this Thursday night game toward a relatively high score, the word “relatively” doing a bevy of work in this usage.

But on top of that, the Owls’ defense is far from sound, so it ought to cough up a few chunk plays of its own, helping this cause as we chase 45 points.

Chase Jenkins has thrown for two touchdown passes this season, hardly enough to usually inspire much faith in that leg of this same-game parlay, but take some relief in knowing Charlotte has given up eight touchdown passes in just three games against teams with dubious passing offenses.

Rice vs Charlotte 3-leg SGP

  • Rice -2.5
  • Over 44.5
  • Chase Jenkins Over 0.5 passing touchdowns

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
