College Football Playoff Odds: Sooners Lengthen After Release

It was pretty much status quo for this CFP bracket reveal, but Alabama saw its college football playoff odds shorten while Oklahoma saw theirs lengthen.

The newest College Football Playoffs rankings from the Playoff selection committee changed exactly one item in the pertinent top, swapping Oregon into the No. 6 seed with Mississippi falling to the No. 7.

That hardly impacted any National Championship odds. In fact, no one’s got longer.

College Football Playoff odds

Biggest Riser

Alabama’s odds did shorten to +1500 from +1700, and that could arguably be tied to the flip of Oregon with Mississippi. The Tide would now not need to face the Ducks in the first round, bettering their chances of advancing.

Yes, that is to plainly say Oregon is better than Mississippi.

Biggest Drop

Surprisingly, Oklahoma's odds fell the furthest, down to +3000 from +2700 before the rankings were released.

Why? Oklahoma slots in at No. 8 right now. The Sooners would have a home game in the first round. Shouldn’t that shorten their college football odds?

Consider this the bookmakers’ nod to how good they believe Notre Dame is, which is Oklahoma’s likely opponent in that first round. That may be a bit short-sighted, both in that the Sooners have arguably the best defensive front in college football and in that these rankings are likely to still shuffle, making that matchup far from a certainty... but it still makes sense.

The most likely bracket is some version of this one, with Oklahoma at No. 8 and Notre Dame at No. 9 — but look at USC at No. 7 Oregon, No. 4 Georgia at Georgia Tech, and No. 6 Mississippi at Mississippi State as possible causes of chaos — and in that most likely bracket, the Sooners would have the most difficult path to the Playoff semifinals, going through both the Irish and the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
