Ponnaiya's prediction: Points should be hard to come by as Stanford squares off with West Virginia’s physical, grind-it-out defense in tonight’s College Basketball Crown matchup.

The Stanford Cardinal take on the West Virginia Mountaineers in Thursday’s College Basketball Crown opener in Las Vegas.

With Stanford’s limited offensive versatility going up against WVU’s bruising, grind-it-out defense, my Stanford vs. West Virginia predictions are expecting a physical, low-scoring battle.

Here are my best free college basketball picks for this tournament clash on April 2, from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Stanford vs West Virginia prediction

Who will win Stanford vs West Virginia?

Stanford: The West Virginia Mountaineers have an elite interior defense but are vulnerable on the perimeter, allowing foes to shoot 35% from deep.

The Stanford Cardinal are 64th in the country in 3-point rate (45.4%) and 55th in 3PT% (37%) since the start of the new year.

In what is projected to be a close game, free throws matter, and WVU ranks just 330th in FT% (67.7%) while Stanford shoots a respectable 73.1% from the line.

Stanford vs West Virginia best bet: Under 136 (-110)

Everything about this matchup suggests a low-scoring clash, with projections ranging from 131 to 134 points.

Stanford has poor ball movement and no capable shot creators outside of Ebuka Okorie. The Cardinal are coming off a 64-63 loss and have been in their share of rock fights.

They tend to get sucked into whatever pace their opponent plays, and WVU ranks 363rd in adjusted tempo.

The Mountaineers are 17th in the country in adjusted defense and excel at defending the rim. That said, they're awful on offense, sitting outside the top 300 in turnover rate and 3PT% (30.7%) since January.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Ebuka Okorie (22.8 ppg) and Benny Gealer (11.1 ppg) are the only Stanford players averaging double digits in points.

Stanford vs West Virginia same-game parlay

The Mountaineers enjoy one of the best home-court advantages in college hoops, and there's a steep decline in their play away from home.

They have a 3-11 record while ranking 94th in adjusted efficiency on road and neutral sites, while Stanford is 8-6 and 65th in adjusted efficiency in those spots.

That, along with Stanford's superior shooting from the arc and stripe, is enough for me to back the Cardinal in this SGP.

Since I'm betting the full game Under as my best bet, let's add the first-half Under to ramp this SGP to +340. Especially since both teams haven't played in three weeks and could start off slow.

Stanford vs West Virginia SGP
