St. John’s vs Georgetown Odds, Picks and Predictions: Pitino Powers Up His Squad

St. John's is in freefall after a hot start and it's wearing on coach Rick Pitino. However, a date with Georgetown could be just what the doctor ordered. The Hoyas have lost 10 straight and haven't even enjoyed a homecourt advantage.

It’s a misery-loves-company battle in the Big East tonight as the St. John’s Red Storm visit the Georgetown Hoyas — a matchup made for bettors and these two fanbases only.

Georgetown is in the darkness right now, riding a 10-game losing streak. It's second last in the conference, with its lone win putting it one up on Depaul.

The Johnnies are just above the Hoyas in ninth and they’ve dropped three straight and five of the last six. Still, they’re 10-point favorites in the college basketball odds.

Can the Hoyas finally break through and pile more frustration onto Red Storm head coach Rick Pitino’s outlook? Read below for my free St John’s vs Georgetown college basketball picks for Wednesday, February 21.

St. John’s vs Georgetown picks and predictions

Home has not been kind to the Georgetown Hoyas, who are just one of two teams with a losing home record in the Big East.

The latest was a 70-54 clubbing at the hands of the Villanova Wildcats. The Hoyas shot a dismal 34% from the field and scored only 19 first-half points. The offense has been a problem all season, with Georgetown scoring 70.9 points per game, ranking 263rd in the nation with their 41.3% field goal percentage sitting in a distant 330th.

There's not much for the home team to cheer about here. In the Hoyas’ last four home games, they are averaging 60.3 points and getting drilled by an average margin of 24.7.

That does include Big East heavyweights UConn and Marquette, so maybe a St. John's Red Storm team whose wheels appear to be falling off could flip those fortunes.

The Johnnies are coming off a 68-62 loss to Seton Hall that saw them squander a 19-point lead, prompting Pitino to call this stint the “most unenjoyable experience” he’s had since he’s been coaching.

In each of their last four losses, including L’s to UConn and Marquette, the Red Storm had second-half leads but weren’t able to land the plane. A team that started the year a blistering 12-4, St. John’s has dropped eight of its last 10.

St. John’s does rank inside the Top 115 in scoring, putting up 75.5 points per game, but its shooting splits aren’t great at 43.3% from the field (242nd) and 31.7% from distance (254th).

However, the Red Storm do make up for it with the fourth-best offensive rebounding rate in the nation, pulling down 13.2 boards per contest.

This matchup has been dominated recently by St. Johns, winning five straight and covering four of those contests.

While the Red Storm haven’t been able to hold leads, each of their four recent losses were among the cream of the Big East crop, who all rank in the top five of the conference.

For that reason, and because Pitino has called out his team for a better performance, this appears to be the perfect get-right opponent to try and turn things around.

My best bet: St. John's -10 (-112 at DraftKings)

St. John’s vs Georgetown same-game parlay

St. John's -10

Jayden Epps Over 15.5 points

Daniss Jenkins Over 2.5 made threes

I’m sure Jayden Epps is thankful for a break in a brutal stretch of games. Georgetown’s leading scorer (17.2 points per game) has had to deal with the best of the Big East, and it's showing up on his stat line. He’s coming off a rough 3-for-12 performance against Villanova — who rank second in Big East scoring defense — scoring just nine points.

It’s the third time he’s gone below 10 points in the last five games. He had just four in a 2-for-8 effort against top-ranked UConn and seven on a 2-for-8 night against ninth-ranked Marquette.

St. John’s is in the middle of the pack in Big East scoring defense, allowing 70.9 points per game. Epps should find a little relief in this matchup.

Let’s make it a three-legged SGP, targeting the recent 3-point success of guard Daniss Jenkins. The senior is coming off a 17-point effort in the loss to Seton Hall, which included a crisp 3-for-6 mark from 3-point range. That’s the fourth time in five games that Jenkins has hit three or more triples, and he’s shooting an impressive 44.1% on nearly seven attempts per game.

Georgetown is a lowly 256th in 3-point shooting defense, with teams hitting at a 34.4% clip. Jenkins should have plenty of good looks at Capital One Arena to stay hot.

St. John’s vs Georgetown spread and Over/Under analysis

This one has stayed in the 9.5-10.5-point range since opening. Neither school is considered a great cover, with St John’s sporting a 12-14-0 mark against the spread. It has failed to cover in five of its last six.

Georgetown is just 10-15-0 ATS. They’ve been double-digit underdogs in six straight games, and have covered just twice.

As for the total, most books have settled in at the 149.5-point range, with most books moving down from a high of 151.5.

The Hoyas have seen the Over go 14-10-1 in their games this season, while SJU has had the Under go 13-12-1.
