Two midwestern basketball powerhouses will face off for a neutral-site contest in Chicago this afternoon when the Indiana Hoosiers take on the Marquette Golden Eagles.

Both teams have cruised through their early-season games, but some defensive lapses for the Golden Eagles have me favoring the Hoosiers in my Marquette vs. Indiana predictions.

Read on for a full breakdown of my free college basketball picks for Sunday, November 9.

Indiana vs Marquette prediction

Indiana vs Marquette best bet: Indiana -2.5 (-110)

Neither Indiana nor Marquette has faced anything that would count as a real test so far this year.

The Hoosiers eased their way to a 98-51 win over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs earlier this week, while the Golden Eagles posted wins over the Albany Great Danes and the Southern University Jaguars.

It’s the game against Southern that has me a little worried about Marquette. While the Golden Eagles ultimately pulled away for a 100-82 victory, the Jaguars were down only six points at the half, were able to match Marquette on the boards, and shot 43.8% from the field.

Those aren’t the kinds of numbers that will play well against a more talented team like Indiana. The Hoosiers have brought in a number of experienced scorers from mid-major teams, including former Sam Houston Bearkats standout Lamar Wilkerson (20.5 ppg last year) and senior Tucker DeVries, who scored as much as 21.6 ppg during his time with the Drake Bulldogs.

Even head coach Shaka Smart acknowledged the Golden Eagles need to be better on defense, and it'll be a tall order to shut down the Hoosiers.

Indiana vs Marquette same-game parlay

With Marquette’s apparent defensive struggles, I’m taking the Over to go along with Indiana on the spread. I’ll also take DeVries to hit his scoring total, as he scored 18 in the opener and has averaged 17.7 ppg throughout his college career.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Outside of gambling, Ed is an avid curler who competes in mixed doubles on the World Curling Tour and runs a popular curling YouTube channel, Chess on Ice. That experience has come in handy during the Olympics, when he has proven to be a successful curling bettor as well.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
