The Georgetown Hoyas will look to bounce back from a disappointing loss over the weekend as they visit the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in Piscataway, New Jersey on Wednesday night.

Georgetown (1-1) blew an 11-point lead against the Holy Cross Crusaders on Saturday. The college basketball odds now make the Hoyas a significant underdog at Rutgers (2-1), a former Big East rival that now represents the Big Ten in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.

The Scarlet Knights have been terrorizing opponents on defense early in the year, which could be a problem for a Hoyas team that is still working on integrating some key transfers into the lineup. We’ll break it all down in our free college basketball picks and predictions for Georgetown vs. Rutgers on November 15.

Georgetown vs Rutgers picks and predictions

Like the Georgetown, Rutgers suffered its own somewhat embarrassing loss to start the year, dropping its opener 68-61 at home against the Princeton Tigers. That was always expected to be a competitive game against the local Ivy League rival, however, and the Scarlet Knights have responded with two dominant performances.

Rutgers has since beaten the Boston University Terriers by 24 points and the Bryant Bulldogs by nine. What’s been most notable about these performances is that the Scarlet Knights have yet to score as many as 70 points in a game.

Instead, they’ve been winning due to a smothering defensive effort. Rutgers held Boston University to just 45 points, while Bryant only posted 57 against them. It may be early in the season, but the Scarlet Knights rank a strong 36th in adjusted defensive efficiency in the Pomeroy Ratings this season. If you prefer more basic stats, Rutgers is allowing an average of just 56.7 points per game, good for 19th in the nation.

Those same basic stats make Georgetown’s offense look solid this year, as the Hoyas were able to put up 94 points against the Le Moyne Dolphins this year. Of course, Le Moyne is just transitioning to Division I basketball and looks to be one of the weakest squads in the country this season, so there’s only so much we can take from that game. The same Georgetown offense dried up down the stretch against a weak Holy Cross team in their loss on Saturday.

One thing we can be certain of on Wednesday night is that this game will be played at a slow pace. Rutgers and Georgetown both play deliberately, ranking 281st and 284th in KenPom.com’s tempo measure respectively. That means even fewer possessions, as nobody will be looking to speed up the game unless things are close in the final minutes.

We don’t have a lot of data on these teams yet – both of which have some important new parts – so it’s hard to say whether Rutgers can cover this relatively large spread. However, there’s no doubt in my mind that this will be a slow, methodical game without a lot of big runs from either side.

Bettors know this too, and the total has come down a few points since opening. However, the combination of the tepid pace and Rutgers’ defense tells me that this number should be even lower. I’m backing the Under tonight.

My best betUnder 133.5 (-110 at Pinnacle)

Georgetown vs Rutgers same-game parlay

Under 133.5

Rutgers -10.5

Aundre Hyatt Over 10.5 points

I’m expecting a low-scoring affair tonight, but I also think Rutgers will have the best of the action, and that’s how I’m building my same-game parlay. We’re going to combine a fairly aggressive Under with Rutgers to cover a heavy 10.5-point spread. Rutgers is the better team, playing at home, and has a suffocating defense that should shut down a Hoyas team that had enough trouble scoring against Holy Cross.

I’m not expecting huge numbers out of the Scarlett Knights either, but one player who should find some success is Aundre Hyatt. The senior forward is averaging 13.3 ppg and has scored at least 17 points in each of Rutgers’ last two outings. Hyatt should continue to be a focal point of the Rutgers offense this season, and the Hoyas aren’t a huge step up in competition, so he should be able to find at least 11 points without too much trouble tonight.

Georgetown vs Rutgers spread and Over/Under analysis

Rutgers opened tonight’s game as a 9.5-point favorite. The early money was on the Scarlet Knights, and the consensus spread is now Rutgers -10, with some sites going to 10.5 points. You can find -108 on Georgetown +10, or -105 on Rutgers -10.5 if you’re looking for the most value possible on the spread.

Neither team is off to a great start against the spread this season. Rutgers has just a 1-2 ATS mark, while Georgetown is 1-1 against the number so far.

With a number that has risen to double digits, I’m less enthusiastic than I normally would be about playing the spread on this game. Rutgers is clearly the better team, returning both some key starters and experienced players like Hyatt, while matching them with promising freshman Gavin Griffiths, who already has a 25-point game under his belt. Given the slow pace of play, 10 points is a lot, but my lean is still toward the Scarlet Knights here.

Tonight’s total opened at 136.5 points but has taken a steep drop down to 133.5 at most sites. There are now equal -110 odds on both sides of the Over/Under at that consensus number.

Rutgers is looking like a strong Under team to start the season, as the Under has gone 3-0 in its games so far. Georgetown hasn’t shown an early trend, with a 1-1 Over/Under mark to start the year.

These are two of the slower teams in the nation, which is a good reason for the number to start so low. However, the deciding factor in how to play the total is clearly the Rutgers defense, which was already solid last season and looks to be just at tight in the new campaign. The Scarlet Knights have yet to play a game with a total that has reached 130 points, and I don’t expect that to change tonight. I’m playing the Under.
