With one second remaining in the game and the Gaels - who were 4-point favorites - up 60-55, Iona fans and players stormed the court to celebrate their team’s win and automatic entry into the NCAA tournament.
However, the officiating crew blew the whistles and hit the Gaels with a team technical, sending the Jaspers to the foul line for two shots. Manhattan’s Donovan Kates knocked down both free throws to cut the lead to three points (60-57), handing Iona backers one of the worst beats in college hoops history.
“Worst moose of my life,” said one Covers Community member.
“And guess who had Iona… I f@cking can’t win with this team… I swear I have not won all year betting these bastards,” vented another Iona backer on the Covers Forum.
What made those series of events even more unbelievable was that Manhattan had to score five points in six seconds to cover the spread. Before the technical foul was called, the Jaspers were down 60-52 with six seconds remaining. Manhattan forward Shane Richards hit what looked to be a meaningless 3-pointer with one second left on the clock before Iona players and fans prematurely ran out on the court.
If you weren’t against fans storming the court before this, you might have changed your mind depending on which side you were on Monday night.
