Twins vs Orioles Prediction, Picks & Odds for Today’s MLB Game

Tomoyuki Sugano is not an overpowering pitcher but has pinpoint command of a wide arsenal of pitches. He can wear an opponent down and should clear a modest strikeout total vs. the Twins.

The Baltimore Orioles will look to avoid a series sweep after dropping both ends of Wednesday’s doubleheader to the visiting Minnesota Twins.

Minnesota is a big-swinging club riding a 10-game winning streak, and my Twins vs. Orioles predictions expect 35-year-old rookie Tomoyuki Sugano to slow those Twinkies sticks.

Read on for my MLB picks for Thursday, May 15.

Twins vs Orioles prediction

My Twins vs Orioles best bet: Tomoyuki Sugano Over 3.5 strikeouts (+100 at DraftKings)

The Baltimore Orioles may be struggling, but 35-year-old rookie righty Tomoyuki Sugano has been a revelation.

The NPB product has given the rotation a much-needed spark. The Orioles have won five of his seven outings, and he’s racked up four quality starts for the Birds.

Sugano won’t blow anyone away. He’s serving up a 45% groundball rate, and his 1.5 walks per nine attest to his tremendous command of six pitches.

Those six offerings alongside his long leash have allowed Sugano to punch out nearly nine batters per nine across his previous three starts. He’ll need the same approach for the Birds to avoid the broom against the Minnesota Twins today.

Minnesota boasts a league-average strikeout rate against righties (21%). The past 14 days have seen an enormous spike in the Twins' overall strikeout rate (24%), and my thinking is if Sugano pitches into the fifth, he eats four Twinkies.

We’re getting a reasonable price for a market Sugano has cleared in his last three starts. He’s always around the dish, and his long leash paired with the Twins' rising strikeout rate (17 times in Wednesday’s doubleheader) is reason enough to bet the Over on Sugano’s strikeout prop total.

Twins vs Orioles same-game parlay (SGP)

Tomoyuki Sugano Over 3.5 strikeouts

Jackson Holliday 2+ total bases

Ryan Mountcastle 2+ total bases

I like Sugano to get the punchouts, while Orioles sluggers Jackson Holliday and Ryan Mountcastle could have big days against Twins starter Chris Paddack.

Righty bats are cracking .280 off Paddack, which is encouraging enough to fire away on Mountcastle, who has reverse splits and is riding a nine-game hitting streak.

Similarly, Holliday has done the bulk of his damage against RHP and has hit safely in seven of 10.
