The Texas Rangers look to close out a series win tonight as they take on the slumping Houston Astros at Daikin Park.
With Jacob deGrom set to square off against Framber Valdez, all signs point to a classic pitcher’s duel. But when it comes to betting value, my money’s on the road underdog. Check out my full Rangers vs. Astros predictions and MLB picks for Saturday, July 12.
Rangers vs Astros prediction
My Rangers vs Astros best bet: Rangers moneyline (+105 at BetMGM)
It took a while, but the Texas Rangers have finally woken up at the plate. After hitting no better than .235 in the opening three months of the season, the Rangers have posted a .286 average over their 10 games so far in July.
Corey Seager’s been a big part of that, with five consecutive multi-hit games, while Wyatt Langford has nine hits in his last 16 ABs with seven runs driven in.
Houston Astros lefty Framber Valdez is coming off a rough start where he allowed four earned runs over six innings, coughing up a pair of home runs to the Dodgers. More importantly, he’s getting little run support.
The Astros have scored two or fewer runs in eight of Valdez's last 16 appearances. That trend is likely to continue against Jacob deGrom, who has allowed two runs or fewer in 14 of his last 15 starts and hasn’t given up more than three all season.
Another worrying concern for Valdez is that he’s heavily reliant on getting ground balls. That could be a problem against a Texas offense that sports the fifth-lowest ground-ball rate.
Houston is in the midst of a four-match losing streak, as the Astros' bats are slumping and key players are missing games. The Rangers may not post gaudy numbers at the plate, but they’ll generate enough offense to get the win.
Rangers vs Astros same-game parlay (SGP)
DeGrom has recorded six or fewer strikeouts in each of his last two outings and hasn’t surpassed 7+ in seven of his last eight.
The Astros also have the sixth-fewest strikeouts at the plate, and their discipline will keep the number down.
Seager isn’t just hitting — he’s finding ways to get on base anyway he can. The Rangers' shortstop has reached safely in 15 of his last 22 plate appearances over five games and has scored in each of them.
Whether it’s against Valdez or the Houston bullpen, expect Seager to rack up multiple H/R/R in this one.
