Mariners vs White Sox betting preview

Starting pitchers

Logan Gilbert (2021: 6-5, 4.68 ERA): The Mariners have to be excited about what they saw out of Gilbert in his first start of the season. The right-hander dominated the Twins allowing just one run on three hits while striking out seven in five innings.

Jimmy Lambert (2021: 1-1, 6.23 ERA): The White Sox counter with another one of their young arms in Lambert. The right-handed rookie, making his first start of his season, relies mainly on a three-pitch mix, consisting of a four-seam fastball, a slider, and a changeup.

Mariners vs White Sox picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

The White Sox have shown why they are a World Series contender over this four-game winning streak. They are a deep team that combines timely hitting with strong pitching. The Pale Hose have put up 6.0 runs per game during this streak while surrendering just nine runs over that span.

Meanwhile, the Mariners have dropped four straight games as scoring runs continues to be a problem early on this season. The Ms have not scored more than four runs in a game this season and are averaging just 2.7 per game. Can they change their fortunes against White Sox’s starter Jimmy Lambert?

The rookie is making his first start of the season and just the fourth start of his career. He has pitched to a 5.40 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP over six games in his short career.

That said, the White Sox probably won’t be asking for a ton of innings from their rookie as they can turn the game over to a bullpen that has pitched to a 2.74 ERA and 1.28 in 22 2-3 innings this season.

The Mariners counter with a young right-hander of their own in Logan Gilbert. The 24-year-old has an electric fastball and compliments that with a devastating slider and is coming off a fantastic performance against the Twins, but he gets a tough test against a White Sox team that ranks third in OPS through the early part of the season.

This game is listed at close to a pick’em thanks to the Ms having an edge when it comes to starting pitching, but their bats have been so cold it's hard to have faith in them in this spot.

We’ll take our chances with the deeper lineup at this price.

Prediction: White Sox moneyline (-110 at DraftKings)

Over/Under analysis

When it comes to the total for this AL matchup, the early money has been on the Under and we’re leaning the same way.

For starters, the Under is 4-2 in the Mariners' six games this season, thanks to their combination of solid pitching and slumping offense. And this game should be no different.

It’s pretty simple for the Ms at this point. They can’t hit. They are hitting .191 with a .596 OPS which ranks 28th and 25th respectively in the MLB. So, even what looks like a good matchup against Lambert feels dicey.

Meanwhile, Gilbert showed why the Mariners are so high on him by showing flashes of his potential in that opening game. And while the White Sox have a strong offense, they don’t crush right-handers the way they do southpaws, ranking 16th and 21st in batting average and OPS.

Mix in two solid bullpens and this game feels like a good bet to stay below the number.

Prediction: Under 9.5 (-120 at bet365)

Best bet

Once again. Logan Gilbert had an excellent debut, using his electric fastball to rack up seven strikeouts against the Twins. But the right-hander pitched just five innings in that game and now faces a tougher White Sox lineup.

The White Sox rarely get cheated at the dish. In fact, they strike out the second-fewest times per game in the MLB, getting punched out just 5.8 times per contest. Even big strikeout guy Robbie Ray was only able to record four in 6 1-3 innings of work last night.

Look for the Pale Hose to be patient with the young pitcher and grab the Under on his strikeout total.

Pick: Logan Gilbert Under 5.5 strikeouts (-124)
