The red-hot Los Angeles Dodgers look to stay hot as they face the slumping Miami Marlins on Tuesday at loanDepot park.

L.A.’s bats have been at their best lately, so I’m taking a closer look at the Dodgers’ team total with my Dodgers vs. Marlins predictions and MLB picks for Tuesday, May 6.

Dodgers vs Marlins prediction

My Dodgers vs Marlins best bet: Shohei Ohtani Over 1.5 total bases (-115 at bet365)

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been producing at the dish and get a favorable matchup against the Miami Marlins’ Cal Quantrill.

L.A. is firing on all cylinders, winning eight of its last nine games. The Dodgers have destroyed right-handed pitching with a 134 wRC+ (second) and .365 wOBA (first) since April 20. Shohei Ohtani has been a big part of the equation, homering in three of his last six games while scoring 10 runs.

Quantrill was a notable offseason acquisition for a Miami team that made hardly any. Things haven’t gone according to plan, as the veteran hurler has allowed 15 earned runs in his last three starts (12 2/3 IP) to balloon his ERA to 8.10. Perhaps Miami shouldn’t have expected much from some whose xERA finished above 5.30 in each of his last two seasons?

The former Stanford product doesn’t strike batters out (13.1% strikeout rate) and allows too much hard contact (sixth percentile average exit velocity, 12th percentile barrel rate). He doesn’t have the repertoire to fool Big League hitters, ranking 128th out of 138 starting pitchers who have thrown at least 20 innings in Stuff+ (88).

If carrying a 6.74 xERA and .329 xBA into a matchup with one of MLB’s best lineups featuring the sport’s best play seems like a dangerous plan, that’s because it is. It doesn’t help that Miami’s bullpen has the worst xFIP (4.82) in the sport.

L.A. will be a danger to plate runs for the entirety of the contest. Ohtani takes on a greater responsibility with teammate Teoscar Hernandez, who's set to undergo an MRI on his hamstring.

Quantrill has been obliterated by lefties (.436/.458/.691) and is in trouble against Ohtani and his 185 wRC+ against RHP. The superstar has collected 2+ total bases in five of his last six games, and I’ll bet on him doing so again on Tuesday.

Dodgers vs Marlins same-game parlay (SGP)

Dodgers team total Over 5.5

Tony Gonsolin 5+ strikeouts

Shohei Ohtani 2+ total bases

The Dodgers are hot, scoring at least seven runs in seven of their last nine games. They’ve also feasted on Miami pitching, scoring 6+ runs in nine of their last 10 meetings with the Marlins while averaging 9.5 runs.

Tony Gonsolin returned from a two-year absence to flummox Miami a week ago, striking out nine batters across six innings. He generated a supreme 44.1% chase rate and 40.5% whiff rate, so it’s hard not to like his chances against Miami again on Tuesday.
