Blue Jays predictions for August 8

Today’s Blue Jays best bet: Vlad won't slow down in SoCal

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Over 0.5 runs (-115 at BetVictor)

While everyone is talking about the epic pitching matchup tonight, I’m zagging and backing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in this spot.

The Toronto Blue Jays slugger is on a tear right now, reaching base in 23 straight games. He has also crossed the plate 23 times over that span, and I expect him to do it again tonight.

Vladdy’s calling card is getting on base. He owns a .458 OBP over his last 23 games and reached base in all four plate appearances in his lone career meeting against Clayton Kershaw, going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks.

Guerrero Jr. is a maestro at the plate, owning the highest xBA in the majors, and is hitting the four-seamer and slider well. Those are the two main pitches of choice for Kershaw, who is allowing hard contact consistently and ranks in the 29th percentile this season in opponent xBA with an xERA of 3.96.

Furthermore, he’s not the Kershaw of old, and is certainly hittable. This is great for a Jays team that leads the majors with a .270 team average, with a league high 136 runs scored since the All-Star break.

It has also been extremely beneficial for Vladdy to have Bo Bichette and Alejandro Kirk, both of whom are hitting over .300 this year, behind him in the lineup to drive him in consistently. I expect that trend to continue tonight.

Today’s Blue Jays same-game parlay (SGP)

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Over 0.5 runs

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Over 1.5 total bases

Bo Bichette Over 0.5 home runs

I’ll continue to bet on Vladdy for the second leg of my SGP and take him to go Over 1.5 total bases. He has an OPS of 1.099, averaging 2.6 bases over his last 23 games, and the power is starting to come around. He’s homered and doubled in back-to-back games.

For the final leg of my SGP, I’m taking Bo Bichette to hit a home run. He took Kershaw deep twice in their only outing against each other back in 2019.

Kershaw is giving up a lot of hard contact and pitches down in the zone often. That’s been a sweet spot for Bo this season, who has a high slug rate against balls low in the zone.

Additionally, Kershaw has allowed five home runs in six starts at Dodger Stadium this season.
