The Yankees will jump all over Luis Severino, but the A's bats can do enough damage against Will Warren to help propel this game Over its game total of 8.5.

The New York Yankees and Athletics meet up in the second game of their early-week series, with Luis Severino making another return to the Bronx.

The former New York man spent the first seven years of his career with the Pinstripes. While his velocity is still strong, not much else is, and my A's vs. Yankees predictions expect him to struggle.

My MLB picks break down the matchup and why we're backing the Bronx Bombers' offense on Wednesday, April 8.

Who will win A's vs Yankees today: Yankees -1.5 (+100)

You can pick your own narrative for how A's right-hander Luis Severino will struggle tonight.

The walk rate of over 20% through two starts won't continue, but it may persist as a story here, given the circumstances of being at Yankee Stadium against a lineup full of patient power. But there are other persistent elements too.

This New York Yankees lineup has hit him well, with Ben Rice, Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and a few others each having over 20 plate appearances against him, and strong peripherals to go with them.

And that makes sense, too. The hard-hit has trended up over the past few seasons, and one that exceeded 40% last season isn’t exactly ideal in this matchup.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Severino has pitched at Yankee Stadium just once since leaving the organization, and it was a disaster. Last June, he failed to make it out of the fourth inning, allowing seven runs.

A's vs Yankees Over/Under pick: Over 8.5 (+113)

Given the Severino factor, I was immediately attracted to this Over, with a projected total of 9.2.

The other side presents scoring chances, too. I’ve been consistently down on Will Warren relative to the market, and while I expect him to be “just fine” tonight, he's also vulnerable.

His breaking-ball run value sits in the Bottom 17th percentile of baseball.

When they sit in the zone, the A's can succeed, and they make solid contact. Warren’s extremely high ground-ball rate has made the underlying metrics look better, but given the historical context, we'll see some regression in that area, and a hard-hit rate consistently in the Bottom 30% of the league will show up again.
