Ontario Liberals introduce online gambling ad bill
While more casino content is being made available to players on platforms licensed by the province’s regulator, a group of Ontario Liberal Party lawmakers have introduced a bill that would ban most forms of online gambling advertising in the province.
Bill 107, presented by MPP Lee Fairclough, proposes amendments to the Gaming Control Act of 1992 to ban online gambling operators from promoting their services within the province.
If passed, the bill would apply to nearly 50 licensed online sportsbooks and casino operators in Ontario and would impose fines of up to $1 million and potential revocation of operating licenses for those who breached the law.
The proposed restrictions would cover multiple advertising channels, including broadcast media, social media, and sponsorship agreements, although some exceptions are included, such as certain advertisements originating outside Ontario.
The bill passed its first reading and has been scheduled for a second reading. It is backed by three additional Liberal MPPs: John Fraser, Stephen Blais, and Ted Hsu. It comes at a time when federal lawmakers are considering their own ban on gambling advertising.
Ontario launched its regulated online gambling market in April 2022 under the Progressive Conservative government led by Premier Doug Ford. The province remains the only jurisdiction in Canada with a privatized online gambling market, although Alberta is set to launch its own gambling market in the next few months and other provinces may follow.
