Key Takeaways

- FanDuel and DraftKings led the market, both with substantial improvements in adjusted receipts
Michigan has one of the five largest gaming markets in the country. Rather than maximizing its potential in what is still early in the legal sports betting era, the state has continued to grow at an impressive rate.
The $338.9 million count for total accepted wagers was nearly $60 million higher than it was the prior year. It was also 19.8% higher than the total reported during July and was the highest total since May.
Adjusted gross receipts ($281.4 million) were also the highest since May and represented the third-highest total of any month in 2025. That was down to a 14.5% hold, which was the second-highest of the year, only behind January’s 15%.
August’s performance resulted in $2.1 million in state taxes and $561.471 in city taxes and municipal service fees. Michigan sports betting has produced $14.2 million in state taxes and $4.6 million in city taxes and fees since the turn of the year, 34.6% and 14.7% increases on the total they had paid at this time last year.
Who performed the best?
Sportsbook | Handle | AGR |
---|---|---|
FanDuel | $107 million | $13.5 million |
DraftKings | $103 million | $9.9 million |
BetMGM | $50.7 million | $4.5 million |
Fanatics | $30.2 million | $2.6 million |
Caesars | $20 million | $976,566 |
ESPN BET | $15.4 million | $1.6 million |
FanDuel once again had the most productive month of sports betting, accepting the largest handle ($107 million) and generating the most adjusted gaming receipts ($13.5 million). Those figures represented year-over-year increases of 5.9% in handle and 77.7% in adjusted receipts.
DraftKings was close behind the market leader with its total accepted wagers ($103 million), although its $9.9 million AGR was substantially behind. Still, the company’s performances marked enormous 32% and 124.1% year-over-year increases, respectively.
BetMGM was a distant but obvious third with $50.7 million in handle and $4.5 million in adjusted receipts, which were up 23.2% and 56.8% year-over-year, respectively.
Fanatics produced a $30.2-million handle, which was up 83.2% year-over-year. It also reported $2.6 million in adjusted receipts just one year after it had a $262,864 loss during the same period.
Caesars and ESPN rounded out the top operators with handles of $20 million and $15.4 million, respectively. Despite having the lesser of those two values, ESPN BET’s $1.6 million in adjusted receipts was above Caesars’ $976,566.
Both sportsbooks still outperformed their handle and adjusted receipt totals from August 2024.
