FanDuel announced on Thursday that it has introduced a new peer-to-peer fantasy sports contest called FanDuel Picks.

The simplified game will pit FanDuel users against one another for a chance to win up to 1,000 times their pooled entry fees.

Key Takeaways

  • FanDuel Picks is only available in states where FanDuel Sportsbook isn’t.

  • FanDuel did not launch its new contest in California.

  • American bettors are expected to wager $30 billion during NFL season.

FanDuel’s new contest mimics those found at popular fantasy sports carriers PrizePicks and Underdog Sports

Here's how it works: Customers choose “more” or “less” on three to six players’ projected stat lines. The higher the number of picks, the more points that can be earned with correct picks. Participants who finish the competition period with the highest score win a share of the prize pool.

“Just in time for NFL season, we are excited to bring fans a social way to engage with the sports and athletes they love with the launch of FanDuel Picks,” said Rob Cullen, FanDuel Picks General Manager. “The 'more' or 'less' selection model offers a streamlined fantasy sports experience, and we look forward to offering our customers another way to interact with games this season.”

FanDuel Picks is already available in 17 states. Notably, it is not licensed as a traditional sports betting operator in any of those jurisdictions.

States offering the new FanDuel Picks include:

  • Alabama
  • Alaska
  • Arkansas
  • Georgia
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Hampshire
  • New Mexico
  • North Dakota
  • Oklahoma
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Dakota
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Wisconsin

California is noticeably absent from the list. The state’s attorney general recently opined that fantasy sports platforms should not be legal, which could explain why FanDuel Picks is not available to California users.

Parlay-style gaming continues

FanDuel’s new game will help it gain traction in states where it isn’t allowed to operate as a traditional sports betting provider, whether because the state hasn’t legalized sports betting or because it hasn’t achieved licensing from the state regulator.

The multi-pick “more or less" model mimics parlays, which are sportsbooks’ favorite type of wager due to their popularity and high hold percentage. The difference with this particular product is that users compete against each other, rather than against the house.

The release also comes at an opportune time with the NFL season getting underway on Thursday, Sept. 4, with the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Dallas Cowboys.

The American Gaming Association, in a release on Thursday, included an estimate that American bettors would wager $30 billion during the NFL season. That’s an 8.5 percent increase on the $27.5 billion estimation that was provided before the start of last season.
