Canada’s play with the puck was very encouraging in their tournament opener. They scored seven goals against a solid Czechia team — and it could’ve been a whole lot more.
They squandered a handful of great chances along the way. Not to mention, a potential Tij Iginla goal was erased by a Czech player gloving a puck off the goalline. That should have led to a penalty shot, but it was not called on the ice, nor was it reviewable.
Nevertheless, Canada lived around the net and piled up quality slot chances despite facing a quality opponent. That bodes well for them heading into a matchup with a Latvia team very much lacking high-end talent and depth.
Latvia rosters only two drafted prospects on this year’s team. They were selected in the 5th and 7th rounds, respectively, so it’s not as if they’re blue chippers who should dominate on a nightly basis.
Canada has also historically put the pedal to the floor in this matchup. Goals are 43-6 Canada over the last five meetings, with the Canadiens scoring double digits in three of those games.
Even in a back-to-back, they should be able to score as many goals (or more) against Latvia as they did Friday night vs. Czechia.
With Latvia rostering zero drafted forwards, mustering up any offense will be difficult. Canada has a good chance of covering a big puck line here.
