The second golf major of the season is off to a blazing start after Xander Schauffele carded a nine-under 62 at Valhalla Golf Club in Lousiville, Kentucky. Schaufelle leads the rest of the field by three and because of that, his PGA Championship odds have shortened to between +250 to +275 depending on the book.

Pre-tournament favorite, and newly-minted father, Scottie Scheffler opened his round with a hole-out eagle on the first. He finished the round shooting a four-under 67 which has him five shots back. Despite this, he remains the second betting choice at +400, ahead of Rory McIlroy (+500) who carded a five-under 66.

Analysis

All eyes were on Scottie Scheffler entering golf's second major, The PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. Fresh off becoming a father, Scheffler took to the course as the betting favorite at +450, and he got off to a flying start, holing out from the fairway on the first for Eagle. After shooting three-under on the front nine, Scheffler leveled out and finished at -4.

The best round of the day went to Xander Schauffele who came into the tournament with odds between +1,400 and +2,000 depending on the book. Schauffele set the course alight, firing a nine-under 62, en route to setting the course record.

He leads by three over Tony Finau and Sahith Theegale, both of whom fired home a 65. Rory McIlroy got through 18 with just one bogey, while carding -5.

As for Tiger Woods, he was up and down, finishing his round with two bogeys and a +1 score.

Deciphering PGA Championship Odds Like all sporting events, odds for the PGA Championship come in various forms, including American odds, fractional odds, and decimal odds. Still, American odds are the most common in U.S. sports betting. Here's how to understand these odds when betting on the PGA Championship:

Positive odds: These express the potential gain from a $100 bet and are usually linked to underdogs or outcomes less likely to occur. If a golfer's odds to win the PGA Championship are +500, this means a winning $100 bet on this player could net a $500 profit. The total return would be $600, which is your $100 stake combined with $500 in earnings.

Negative odds: These show how much you must wager to earn $100 and typically relate to favorites or more likely outcomes. If a golfer's odds to win are -150, you would have to bet $150 to stand the chance of making a $100 profit. So, your total return here would be $250, with your $150 stake added to a $100 profit.

Whether the odds are positive or negative, they tell you about a golfer's perceived chances of winning. Higher positive odds suggest the golfer is less likely to win, though a victory could lead to a substantial return. Lower negative odds imply the golfer is a favorite to win but might offer a smaller return due to the higher chance of success.
