Was wondering how you guys and girls go about capping your games. Myself I use a modified strategy from Lem Bankers Book of sports betting. Which basically You take the both teams starting pitchers era and subtract them ie: 3.5 - 2.30 = 1.20 and then times it by .20 that is 1.20 * .20 = .24 thats .24 cents toward the better pitcher. Next you take the OBP's and minus them ie: 335-315=20 then convert that to a ten cent line of .20 thats .20 cents to the better OBP. I also use the home teams home win lose record against the away teams away win loss record. I will add a .10 or .05 to the home team or .00 if its close. After that I look if either team has a outstanding relieve pitcher who was not active the night before and give that team a .05 advantage. I also started messing around with the OBP against a righty or lefty. Which ever the opposing team is facing. After all is said and done if my line is off the books line by .15 or more I take that team. Say my number has the Mets a -135 and my book has -120 I take the mets the reverse is if the Padres (Bad Example) are a +105 for me and they are a +120 at the book I take them. I really try to find the Dog at the book that I have as a Favorite on paper. This system is keeping me around 50%. Thats not bad given the dogs that come through. Hoping to hear some incite on your system of capping games. Doesn't just have to be Baseball. BOL and see ya out there.

You are well ahead of the game. You don't have the perfect system but yours should net a good amount of profit. You need to look at slugging in addition to OBP. Getting on base is only going to help a team in as much as the batters are hitting themselves in. Also, only use the SLG and OBP of the batters as they are against either RHP or LHP depending on who is starting for the other team. One final thought -- you can give or take even more cents than you are for home field advantage (disadvantage). For example, if the Orioles play at Boston, I'll give the Red Sox at least 20 cents easily before I do any of the main capping. Also, if the road team is better on the road than the home team is at home, feel free to disadvantage the home team a little.

Can I ask, why are you multiplying by these amounts? What makes 20 so important?

Ill be honest I have to find the book to give you a legit answer. But it seems to be working out. It may be for a .20 cent line not sure. I guess you could play with that number and see how it works out for you. BOL

Thanks for the input Lanastasis. Ill have to toy around with the SLG%'s and see how it works out. I'm trying to lay it all out in Excel to make the math a lot easier.

The reason i ask is that there has to be a reason this was suggested. Could you tweak this number and get better returns? Has the evolution of tighter and more competitive lines made the 20 redundant and maybe 10, or 15 or 22.5 is a better number.
If you are winnign long term on this (min 1000 bets) then you probably have the basis of a succesful system. Maybe tweaking it a fraction could make it even more succesful.
Don't over-complcate things

LongTermProfits if you know a way I could download the stats I would love to here it.
Also let me say I dont just go by the numbers. I also go by my feel of the game after the numbers are done. Say pitchers that havent pitched alot of innings or teams really slumping these are things I take into consideration.

All you have to do to download stats is to import data into an Excel spreadsheet. I get 90% of my stats downloaded automatically from the Web and it saves me hours of work every day.

Tomspeople and LongTermProfits -- You can use any site, depending on what stats you need.
First you guys need to know how to import a table into excel from any web site. Let me know if you guys know how to do this. It's pretty easy to explain.
For example, I have a worksheet in my spreadsheet where I store every team's stats against right and lefthanded pitching from sports.yahoo.com and I refresh this data every day in a few minutes, no problem. You could also use ESPN.com or whatever. Your choice.
The main thing is knowing how to do this in Excel. After that, you can hook it up with any web site. Let me know if you have any questions. Hope this helps.

OK Lanny I figured it out. It has to do with the Web query's right? But it imports a lot of useless info that I don't use to cap my games. Can I edit it to load only, say SLG% or game time starters ERA?
P.S. Thanks for the info.

Yeah guys, I'm talking about a web query, not copying and pasting. I think the link that TheStugots posted should be pretty informative.
Stugots, you asked about the useless info. Don't sweat the small stuff. I will just import a team's entire offensive table which includes a lot of crap like doubles, triples, etc., but this is irrelevant. All you need to do is do a Vlookup for whatever stats you want from that table and then you're good to go. Just lookup the stats you need and that's all she wrote.

Much appreciated. I'm in the process of loading the teams by divisions on different sheets from ESPN.COM. Also do you know if you can import from one sheet inside excel to another with a formula?
