I'm not an expert at explaining these things, but I'll give it a try.
A chase system may attempt to exploit a pattern that you believe you have recognized.
One of the systems you've seen here is taking the biggest ML favorite of the day on the RL. The reasoning, at least as I see it, is that good teams do more than beat bad teams. They beat up on them.
Go back and see what the Yankees have done to the Orioles over the years. I'm not saying that the pitching match ups always make the Yankees a "good" team and the O's a "bad" one, but you are figuring that over the course of the season the Yankees are going to win their fair share of games by more than one run.
Yes, lots of people don't care for chases. I'm not here to argue the merits but merely to explain. I have three of them going and would be glad to share them with you in a PM.
